Hi guys,
Something wrong with my N97 past few days. My phone does not give notifications of new SMSes nor do they appear in my inbox. Only when I send an SMS will I receive notifications for all the SMSes that I had received from the last time I sent 1. So basically, I need to send a SMS to trigger my phone to check for any SMS received.
Resetting the phone does not help.
Any advise on this please?
Mine can be a bit laggy with texts but not as bad as yours.
Try this, which resolved a similar problem on my N85:
Go to SETTINGS > CONNECTIVITY > NETWORK and change OPERATOR SELECTION to manual. When the phone's searched for available network choose one other than your own and the phone will give you a message something like 'Network not supported'. Then either choose or own network or change back to automatic and let it pick your own network. This should give it a 'new place' on the network and may resolve the issue.
Of course, if this is just another N97 hardware bug then it won't help at all.
Sounds like it could be the "Curse of Silence" bug that can affect Symbian devices. See here:-

Haven't heard of the N97 suffering from it though.
Nokia have released a cleaning prog. for 3rd edition phones:-

Might also be worth checking with your service providor and getting them to look at your mailbox.
I've had the same problem and I think it's firmware related.
Most people don't notice slow delivery of SMS messages as they are not expecting a message to arrive at a specific time. About 3 weeks ago I wanted to download something from the Ovi store and got it to SMS me a link.
Or, I thought I did. I wait 10 mins and nothing arrived. I had read a post on a forum (possibly here) about delayed texts on the N97, so I power cycled my phone. Sure enough, as soon as the phone restarted, I got a text from Ovi. I tried the send a text feature again and this time the message arrived in seconds.
Of course, this could just be the Ovi store being crap, but I don't think so - if you search around other N97 users have reported delayed texts, I think this is the kind of thing that could be going on and you either don't notice, or put it down to network operator problems.
Since I switched from my Nokia 9300 to the N97, my scheduled SMS messages (weather, horoscope, etc.) also seem to be haphazardly delivered--some delayed by hours, others by days.
Why can't the N97 be as rock-solid as the 9300?
Well, that's one bug my N97 never suffered from (crossed fingers )
No problems on N97 v11 with Vodafone.
Usually takes about 10 seconds from sending to getting a delivery report using Packet Data.
Menu > Messaging > Options > Settings > Text message > Preferred connection >Packet data.
It's definitely not operator issue, tried another SIM on other operator with same problem.
Will hard reset fix this?

My problem was with V11, on Vodafone, with full signal. Have never had a problem in the past... this may be a particularly unfortunate manifestation of the low memory problem, as at the time I had a few things running on the N97 and it had been going for a day or two since the last power-cycle.
If you need to receive texts the minute they are sent, probably best to power-cycle your N97 every morning.
I suspect that the reason different people see different behavior is in how their N97 is configured with regard to automatically updated applications.
On mine I have:
Facebook on the home screen always logged in.
Accuweather
Email with automatic "pulls" of two accounts every 30 minutes
RSS Feeds updating every four hours
WiFi access points being detected every 10 minutes.
I know that the Facebook application is a heavy intermittent user of the CPU and connections. I have run continuous applications in parallel which every five minutes or so will have their screen updates "freeze" for about 5-8 seconds. It doesn't do this with Facebook logged out.
What I think is happening is that if an SMS is coming in when Facebook is taking over, the N97 can't accept it and so the SMS transmission is retried later on whatever interval the sending system is set up for.
Anyone else with observations/theories?
No theories, but something I noticed yesterday.
My son rang me on the landline. I asked him why he didn't use my mobile & he told me he'd phoned & then texted my mobile & rang the landline when I didn't answer. The phone was next to me on my desk! Sure enough, when I turned the screen on, there's a missed called & a missed message notification - it never rang or lit up! Later, he rang me again on the mobile. This time it rang, but the ring tone had changed! (to the default Nokia one). Thinking about it, the random change to my ring tone has happened before.
Got a mind of its own, this phone.

I think my phone got this, the symptoms fit. When I deleted all messages, there was a flashing warning that messages were full.
I'm gonna try a hard reset soon, any more advise before I proceed?
