Now live is The Phones Show 87, also embedded below, featuring (since I've been away on holiday) 24 testimonies from my audience, sharing their current choice of phone/smartphone and why. Plenty of Symbian representation in the choices, with the all-conquering Nokia E71 being most 'picked'.
Read on in the full article.
It's not available via rss feed in podcast app :/
Yes, utterly weird. feed://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/sshow/sshow.rss is set up properly, yet (again) Podcasting refuses to read the file. [Later] I've fiddled with the RSS - try now, please!
Nope my N96 still shows no podcast.
How odd... just checked again and it now shows 2...
It's on, thanks Steve :icon14:
i should have submitted my 5800 video. Granted i'm in the minority. But its such a good little phone. Minimalistic yet slick looks, excellent screen resolution for web browsing, its very stable over the n97. All around my favorite mobile right now.😊
and why is it that i cannot play these video podcast thru the podcast app, but they work thru the rss feed no problem. Also the file size is different on each too.
Great show, and nice to see the N82 still up there with the best.
@Roger: You *are* trying to play the QVGA feed, right? Not the desktop-aimed VGA one?

Steve, why don't you use mpeg4 sp for VGA version? It would work on almost any phone that way, benefit is obvious.

Well, most phones trying to play my feed are QVGA screened - no real point in forcing them to struggle playing a feed with higher spec. I'll accept that more and more people are starting to play The Phones Show on a 5800 or N97 or i8910 HD, with higher res screens, so I'll look into a change of format for the future.
The current M4V format used for VGA is optimised for iTunes and uses the AVC codec. Can someone confirm if this works/doesn't work on the N97? I don't have one here to check etc.

VGA version doesn't play on N97. AVC decoding is limited to qvga 😞. I really hope Nokia will do something about it in the next update. It plays fine on I8910, though.
I don't see any major drawback for you to switch to mpeg4 sp for VGA, besides maybe slightly larger file for the same quality as AVC. Or does iTunes requires video to be AVC encoded?
Yes, the larger file size was the main reason why I wanted to use a 'clever' codec like AVC or H.264 etc. for the VGA version.
Changes are afoot though - looking to move to Mevio for hosting at some point soon and also looking to go widescreen, so might as well change codecs while I'm at it! 8-)

Would be very cool. And FYI, AVC and H.264 are the same thing 😊. You should do a test for yourself using AVC and mpeg4 sp at the same bitrate to get the same filesize. I think the difference in quality would be very minimal if any actually.
Cheers.

I don't think you are in a minority! At 3-4 million units a quarter the 5800 is one of the top-selling smartphone models in the world, that's almost as much as all Eseries models put together.
And speaking as someone who has a 5800 and N97, I prefer the 5800 too. They've both got strengths, but the 5800 feels better as an ordinary everyday phone, it's the right size and it looks the part too. And the 5800's price is unbeatable, half that of the N97...

haha well that's probably it. i just have a TON of allaboutsymbian links in my podcasting app, sicne i use symbian-guru's imported podcast file. there is AAS audio and video from like 2 years ago that still shows up!
i just use the web browser rss feed seems to be the best way for your vidoe stuff. audio works fine in the podcasting app though. question, why would you cput anything OTHER than the QVGA version in the podcasting link? seems like only phones would be accessing this.
