Personally, I'm not holding out for massive improvements. I think there is too much to fix in just one update! 😃

Banzi, are you the messenger of doom ?
I was feeling quite positive until you posted 😊

I am hoping this is going to be mainly bug fixes and another update in September (v20?) may add new functionality (Skype / Virtual RAM / Kinetic Scrolling in UI, etc).

This firmware only goes up by one version (v11 -> v12) so it'll only be bug fixes.

Big jumps in the firmware (v12 -> v20) generally indicate new features.

So, is it worth waiting for this before I return my phone for a replacement to fix the GPS issue (position dropouts)?

😮

Easy firmware fix...

Downgrade camera software so that it behaves more like a 1.3 MP camera and everyone will be less tempted to take photo's and video. This would then mean less opening and closing of the lens cover and in turn, less lens scratching.

Simple really. 😃

GRRRR!

Absolutely! I wrote in another thread just moments ago that a firmware update fixed a similar problem on my N95 Classic. Most of the issues that people seem to be having are purely software related (unresponsive touchscreen, double-press unlock slider to unlock phone, web/widgets closing randomly) so this may just do the trick **Fingers crossed for you all**

I may have been a tad hasty in writing this. v10 -> v11 introduced the Ovi Store to be built into the firmware, whereas before you had an icon which let you download it. This *could* be seen as a "new" feature because it wasn't included before.

I think you're right on the money, the small increments tend to be fixes and 'refinements' whereas the large numeric jumps tend to be new features. I would imagine there will be a team working on v20 in parallel with the team pumping out the fixes.

so v20 will introduce entirely new bugs!

Yes, and let's face it - there aren't many bugs we haven't seen! Maybe we should help them think of new ones?

How about a new bug in the messaging application that randomly sends swearwords to people from your contacts list?

Or an exciting new way of adding scratches to the front camera as well?

...or more commonly known as "The Tourettes Bug" 😃

don't you guys have a blog where you can post all this fucking spamming / bitching / moaning??
I'm getting sick and tired of reading the same shit over and over again, about all your problems in every thread...
We get it, you had a bad experience with this phone. I don't want to hear it over and over and over again from the same users all the time...

If you don't like it... don't read it. 🙄

Got to say though, if you don't like people posting problems about the N97, there aren't many N97 forums you could read! 😃

Maybe you could start up your own... "Uptight Norwegians who are happy with their N97" forum?

is your N97 perfect? i want one of those......

I am actually happy to read about people complaining of bugs .
It gives me the opportunity to check (and recheck) if my phone is striken too and when I realize that it is'nt (apart for the sleepy unlock slider and the scratchy lens cover) I get a nice feeling of relief.

I was thinking: since the N97 was released a full month before in Britland than in my little frigid country , could it be that those early units were more bug infested than those that finally made it to our shores?
I say this because on danish forums about the N97 , apart for obviously faulty units, people seem to complain only about the unlock slider and the lens cover, which are the very same issues afflicting my N97 too.

:viking:

He has a point though - every thread with news seems to have reference to the camera problem - "does firmware fix the camera?" teeheehee. Very funny the first hundred times.

When Nokia fix the problem. Then you'll stop hearing about it. Until then... better get used to it!

yeah - but by that time it'll be the same people saying - does Firmware 22.0.1 fix my broken hinge?

Teeheehee - you soo silly, of course firmware not fix hardware.

Anyways - is there an update log on the new f/w?

I don't have torretts I just think your a c***

LOL

Just for the record: I am a Norwegian who is quite happy with his phone except for the camera and GPS issues.

As we know now, there are no GPS and camera issues. Nokia support professionals have said so. My phone is the exception to the rule.

As for you, Fleksnes; what would you suggest we discuss? Show me a forum that isn't riddled with complaints about the failings of the chosen subject. That's what we do. It's the nature of the beast.

The problem here is that the N97 is the penultimate "converged" device bringing together phone/PDA/computer/MP3 player/GPS/camera/FM/TV-out.

As a multi-converged device it is the epitome of the definitions of hardware and software merged together:

Software - something that if you play with it long enough it works.

Hardware - something that if you play with it long enough it breaks.
