I wrote to Customer Care at the Nokia Store earlier today to report the weak GPS Signal problem and lens scratching issues. This was the response
"I am sorry to learn that you are having some difficulty using your Nokia N97. Let me assure you that there are no generic issues with this phone model. Personally, I have been using this phone since its launch and to date it has had several bumps and bruises but is still in perfectly good working condition. Therefore, your recent experience is rather uncommon."
So there you go, no such generic issues with the phone. I can only assume it's a massive coincidence that so many of us are reporting the same thing.
That's funny. This is an excerpt from the email i got back from Nokia Indifference: -
I am sorry to learn that you are having some difficulty with the camera on your Nokia N97. Let me assure you that there are no generic issues with this phone model. Personally, I have been using this phone since its launch and to date it have had no issues whatsoever; including the camera. Therefore, your recent experience is rather unexpected.
But Nokia press office said: -
Hello Dave,
Thank your for your enquiry. We are investigating the issue, so at this point we don't have any further comments to give.
Best regards,
Henna Pelkola
which kinda acknowedges "the issue"at least...
I took mine to a Nokia Indifference Point last week and they replaced the lens, but now it's scratched again so i might take it again this week too...
D
Yes, I got a very similar email from them way back in June, when it was just about possible to believe they hadn't had a lot of reports of lens problems.
For ages my N95 would get a poor GPS signal and take ages to lock onto any sattelites (+5 minutes). A-GPS wasn't helping in the slightest and I'd even gotten to a point where I thought Nokia were using a port on my GPRS for A-GPS that was blocked on O2's PAYG. Then the next big firmware came out (v30 I think) and then suddenly it'd get a lock within 30 seconds! Maybe a firmware update, when the next one comes out, might address your issue* on the N97.
Then again, if they fixed it last year with the N95 then surely it should work on the N97 straight away...
*The issue of the poor GPS lock, not the scratching lens, obviously.
Of course, if we are to believe Nokia's personally tailored emails there will be no fixes forthcoming as there are no issues to fix.
Perhaps they could try selling some of these perfect phones instead of keeping them all for their 'support' staff?
That's a bit like Carphone Warehouse Merry Hill, they said they had sold 100's and only had mine and another with problems.
When pushed to how many he could not tell me! LOL they prob sold 5
