Where is North? Can your phone tell you? Yes, if it's an N97 with a compass app. But should you bother, asks Ewan, in his review of N97Compass? Predictably something of a luddite, he opts instead for a plastic compass and paper map! Ewan does make some good points about the irritating need for calibration and the bare bones nature of the utility though. And note that the free Ovi Maps 3 also shows directional information if you're zoomed into your current position, etc.

Its the kind of program that you wouldn't use very often but I like it...
On a recent trip to Florida I got myself in a complete muddle and was saved by a compass (that was built into the cars rear view mirror) as I wasn't sure which direction I was heading in!
Sounds pretty lame I know - You would have had to have been there! lol
Would be great if it could be incorporated into a widget that shows the direction for Mecca - for a potential 1.5 billion customers anyway !!! 😊
Here is a compass , related to the sun and moon position . This one I use sometimes . Its JAVA based , no digital compass needed :

In an urban environment, it is far more useful to have nokia maps open.
I could see that a compass app could be useful if it pointed north, and also to a gps destination. Like a geocache location for example! That'd be great
I have Compass (the prettier one) on my N97 and while I agree with the others that you can get the same functionality and more with Ovi Maps and the calibration part can be tedious, the thing is it loads much faster than maps, doesn't go through the whole GPS locking procedure and once you get the hang of it, calibration is just a few quick turns of the phone.
This app has come in quite handy when I just need to figure out which direction I'm facing and with this, I can get reading in under 10 seconds.
Sometimes you just need to know where you're facing, not where you are. 😊
