Hi All;
I bought the N97 because I need to use the SIP (native) to configure it to use my VoIP service, but I discover it does not have SIP.
Anyone can advise what is the solution and if new firmware will help? I do not need skybe because it is proprietary and not native.
What about the codec (g729, gsm, g723)?

Bilal
Yes, the N97 does have native SIP, *BUT* you need to configure it.
Menu->Settings->Connectivity->Admin. settings->SIP settings.
You will need to create an SIP profile with the correct settings for your carrier.
In the contacts selection for a phone number you will be given the option of a Voice Call or Video Call.
My carrier (AT&T) in the US does not offer SIP service (yet).
In which firmware?
Actually my current firmware is V 10.0.012
I tried what u said since I bought the mobile and actually I am a super VOIP admin (I am service provider), but I noticed that the SIP profile that I created is never register (and never even send the registeration request for my server), actually I do not know why?
Is it because of the firmware I have or this SIP is for Video and not Voice?
How can u help?

Bilal
the SIP is only for video calling, not true SIP calling like the old phones like the n95 had. so nokia removed SIP calling on all new phones like 5800 and n97 and n86. nobody knows why, but its basically gone. rumor is they will be updating the n97 with skype calling in Q3 and that may possibly bring back the old SIP profile. but nobody really knows the details on what that means. so you are SOL.
But if they update with Skybe, there is still a problem: Skybe is not native SIP.
What do u think?
In my case, currently how can I place a SIP calls from N97?

I'm using Nimbuzz to place SIP calls on my N97, and it seems to work OK. Fring also works, but for me had unacceptable lag during voice calls. Neither of them integrate into the phones dialler, but they are both able to pull numbers from Contacts, so it's good enough for me. Native SIP on the N95 was more convenient, but this will do for now.
What about the codec g729 (or gsm or g723), any of the suggested software (Nimbuzz or Fring) support it?
Also, the native SIP that existed in N97 support the codec (g729 or gsm or gsm)?
Any advise?

Bilal
I know it is SIP functionality, but what about the codecs?

This is soooooo frustrating.
Everyone keeps saying "use fring" or "use nimbuzz" blah blah.
We use VOIP here at work to communicate with each other. We have our own VOIP (asterisk) server here at work, and everyone connects to the wifi with their phone. So I can't use fring or nimbuzz, and they act as a proxy.
Nokia made a big mistake this time around, I got myself an N97, but can't use it at work, because I can't do VOIP.
NOKIA *spits* :icon13:
it can work, but ofcourse u have to configure it well.
But until now, I do not know if fring or nimbuzz can use g729 codec or not?
Any one can advise?

Exactly why i said nobody knows what that supposed update really means because skype doesn't use sip. As of now the native sip client is gone from new nokia phones. The only solution is to use an app like fring. Sucks.

Fring support or Fring forums might be the best place to ask that question 😊
