Ok guys,
had the N97 for 2 days already! and thought I should add something here.....
Day 1: bricked it (of course - tried the upgrade on NSU)
Still day 1: thanks to all you guys on this forum I managed to unbrick it (sorry for not mentioning all your names, but you know who you are).
Day 2: installing various progs and all seems to go well.
Still day 2: do not see what the problem is with the lens cover. Open it with care maybe? I open mine slowly or fast and it does not seem to scrape. Maybe it is a later version?
Unlock key was at first lousey - after bricking and then upgrading, it's fine.
GPS - locks on as quick as my N95 does, and is also as accurate, in fact it's better because of the compass function.
I think that the point here is - (drum roll).... we who chose a Nokia, chose it because we are techis (spelling?), guys that love new technology and can handle all the shortfalls and updates etc. we do not shy away from flashing (gasp!) WE CAN HANDLE THAT!!!
If the People that buy the iPhone were to have these problems they would probably burst into tears and go running to the shop where they bought it!
Any way that's my 2 cents worth.
Be strong, there is nothing that Nokia can throw at us that we cannot handle.
Cheers guys,
Barrie
It seems Nokia have fixed most of the problems in newer handsets.
The problems me and others are having arn't acceptable in a 500 phone.
The lens scratches usually happen after a few weeks, i didn't notice mine until about 2 weeks of use.
Your phone might be getting perfect GPS accuracy, but for me and others, the GPS is crap. Obviously it's not firmware related because your handset is (probably) running the same firmware as ours.
It's something Nokia need to admit is a problem and fix it.
To be honest I'm thinking of sending my phone direct to nokia and asking them to replace it with a newer build...
OK, I've just sent the following email (although I've removed my details from the snippet) to the dedicated support group at
Guys,
I spoke to your support line a couple of days ago regarding my N97.My IMEI is
[removed].
We discussed the issues with my lens being scratched with the lens cover
slider and that fact that my GPS seems unable to hold a signal.
I think at this point I'd like to replace the entire unit since the unit I
have currently is probably best described as not fit for purpose.
The lens cover has already been replaced once, replacing it again is
unlikely to help - and the flash simply cannot be used without rendering
the photograph unusable. As a result to take a photo I have to softly
softly open lens to in a desperate attempt to avoid further scratches, Turn
off the flash. Take picture. It makes spur of the moment photography
impossible!
The erratic connection of the gps means that I cannot use the device for
navigation as more often than not it's following me rather than me
following it. The constant route recalculations even though you've not
deviated from the prescribed route invariably take place as I'm approachign
junctions/turns/etc. The speed display flickers between 0mph and te speed
that I'm doing - spending more time on 0! I've had to go back to my navman
unit. Currently my maps trial period is ticking pointlessly away...
Please advise how to return the device - not for repair, but for
replacement.
Many thanks,
Dave Cozens
I'll let you know if I get a response...
D
Dave.....Have you debranded yours ???
Only out of interest like 😊
No need. I got RM-505 out of the box so it picked up the euro updates.
D
Hmm, mine is RM-505 but I still had to change the product code before I could get the EURO1 updates.
Anyway, I wrote Nokia a very similar letter to yours. This is when they told me there were no common faults with the phone, my case was unusual and I could get lost if I thought they were going to replace it.
In response, I told them they were a disgrace and unless they pulled themselves together I would not be purchasing any more of their devices.
They didn't even bother to respond to that. Must have got the email address wrong and wrote to Nokia Dontcare by accident.
Hang on ...mines a RM 505 but still no updates ???
Did you try with PC suite?

Thats all I ever use ??
Maybe a product code code change is needed, does this void the (useless) warranty ???

Apparently, unfortunatly, Yes.
BTW, i have a sim free N97 (black) straight from nokia and i still can't get the new v12 update yet.
The sim-free version sold to the UK market still has a different product code even though it's RM-505.
If you want to get the updates on the day of release you'll need to change the product code to EURO1. It took about 3 weeks after initial release for v11 to be available for UK models.
This makes me feel that Nokia actually has a department whose whole reason for existing is to think up new and interesting ways to annoy me.
Right, here's a update of sorts.
I spoke to the helpful supervisor on the N97 support line again just now (you know who you are if you're reading this...). The upshot of the conversation is this: -
- She's forwarded the details of my complaints to Project Programme. They are apparently not in the UK. She's requested they get back to her when they have more info regarding lens scratching.
- As far as replacement of the phone goes, that's something that she cannot organise as the N97 support line is primarily for software and device support, not hardware support & warranty issues.
- If I want to return the device to Expansys(which is obviously not straightforward with a mobile on contract) I'd be within my statutory rights to do so.
So, the advice I've been given for now is, if the support line guys get an update on scratchy lens fun then they will call me. In the meantime I can continue to take the N97 to Nokia Care and have it repaired (on a weekly basis)
In other news,
-They phoned me because one of the emails I sent was forwarded to their department (since I emailed Nokia Care and various head office type addresses I don't know which one). Somebody, somewhere is paying vague attention at least...
-Nokia are aware of the petition (at least the N97 support line folks are). I don't know if any other departments within Nokia are.
More news as I get it.... *sigh*
OK, a further update. This morning I gave up and thought "sod it" and sent my N97 off to the freepost address for their Anovo support people who do repairs etc.
This afternoon I get a call from Anovo, from a young lady arranging to send me a shiny new N97 in exchange for my old one.
When I asked where the request came from (because I've not spoken to Anovo support before - I just posted) I've been told it came from head office...
Interesting.....

You should have asked for a voucher you can exchange for the N900... the N97 is yesterday's phone 😉😃

Let us know if it has any visible changes to the lens cover. 😊
