I am getting used to my Vodafone E71 and have had to put the camera on a soft key as the camera side button does not do anything.
Is there a way of altering it?

Isn't the button between the volume buttons for the camera?
No. IIRC it calls up the voice recorder in standby mode and/or mutes an active call.
