Ewan, The Fringe and The Nokia N97 - part 5

It's part 5 of Ewan Spence's 'real world' test of the Nokia N97 at the Edinburgh Fringe and it's embedded below. In this wide-ranging part, he looks at 5800-to-N97 familiarity, at one-handed use, about how parts of the S60 5th Edition interface are like the Mimbari Grey Council (a Babylon 5 reference!), about the lack of a keylock clock (out of the box), about a Facebook widget that's just sllooooowwww, plus he explains why the N97 should come with the full editing version of Quickoffice, before finishing with some E75 comparisons and the observation that the N97 is like the stunning prom date which goes badly wrong... It's all below, in Ewan's inimitable style.

May I suggest a Nokia BH 903 or BH 804... that way you can talk and check your phone

Although not pre-installed, FreeUnRAR for S60 is a free download.
Also, here's a commercial app called Best Jotter. It's like Notes, but it allows you to organize notes in a hierarchical structure. It has also an import/export function. Have you tried it? I'd be interested in hearing your comments about it.

I am glad you mentioned quickoffice as I wondered why you were struggling with notes when I thought you had it installed.

The announced MS deal of Office mobile will probably stop any incentive for bundling the full version of quickoffice with the N series which is a real shame. I notice the iPod & iphone version of quickoffice is cheaper than the symbian version, just re-checking prices and there is a deal on for $19US for symbian instead of $40 the iPod version is still slightly cheaper at $13US.

Would creating folders to store specific notes be a work around? Creating folders as categories instead of note categories. There would be more work in the short term for greater organisation in the long term, is it possible to move notes around on the N97? it does not seem to be possible on my N95.

Edit

I am enjoying your podcasts, thanks.

Very nice video, keep them coming!

It's a bit of a chore to setup, but you can organise your active notes in folders, and search with the standard find function. Works fine for me. Active notes are great because they are so versatile.

Active note allows filing by folders but the big drawback is that it is not possible to sync. It would be great to be able to sync the notes by date and time with the calendar and by subject matter.

Fair point about handling both a call and refering to info at the same time on a single device. However, I find the solution to be to have 2 devices.

By that I mean the phone plus a hands free (bluetooth or cable).

Easy enought to carry. For bluetooth, go for a Nokia one, that way you have a common charger...

Ewan is great, love watching these 😊 I must agree with him on the N97. I see lots of people buying them, repeat Nokia customers so it's not a flop as such like the N96 was (which nobody bought) but for many it will be the device that makes them never buy a Nokia again. It makes you wonder what Nokia has been doing all this time. I mean yes, now we know they will ditch Symbian to the mid end and use Maemo as it's replacement but what's an even geekier operating system (which I must say, doesn't do much for me) going to do to bring over people that are now going to the fruit phone. I have a 5800 and it's nice but my E75 and N86 are definately my main phones. They are the pinnacle of Symbian S60 at the moment.

Evening all,

I hear you all on Bluetooth headsets but I'm not leaving one in my ear on the off chance, and that means I'd have to pull it out and everything once a call came in - which isn;t practicaly for a 2- second call (there are a lot of short sharp calls at the Fringe).

Unregistered hits the nail on the head with active notes - no sync.

i disagree with your comment about the n97 having early firmware. there is very little difference with the 5800, or even with the non-touch nokias that have been released over the last few years. i know that the version of s60 that the n97 runs on is different than the version that say the n86 runs on, but as more and more of allaboutsymbians podcasts have been discussing, these differences are really not anything that the man in the street would notice. i have bought and used all of the nseries over the last 2 years and they are all the same, basically. so with this in mind i really have to say that this is not early firmware for the n97. they released it as such and this is part of the reason why i have stopped buying nokias. i knew without a doubt that any nseries i bought over the last 2 years would have issues connecting or staying connected with my bluetooth headset until a firmware update was released, that the call log would show all calls with the mobile icon, that there would be some kind of bug issue with the gallery, there would be stability issues, etc, etc, etc. i love the feature set, i liked s60, but it is clear to me that since the release of the n95 nokia is doing a half-assed job with either hardware (sliders nseries, not eseries), software, or both.

since nokia skimped out on the processor and ram, they really should have made it up on the os......but they didnt. early firmware is the os that is running on my htc magic, and it is far more stable and enjoyable to use vs the n97 that i bought and sold after 2 weeks.
keep up the good work, though. i really enjoy the teams work
