Alright people? Just back from my three week break in Blighty and back in Saudi now, hardly got on line at all whilst I was on hols - did I miss much?
Anyway, now I've got more time on my hands....anyone any idea when Apple are gonna write a plug in for iSync so it works with the N97? at the moment, I can't sync at all with my ( brand new ooo-err) Macbook Pro.
I did email Nokia, but their response was it that it's out of their control, so they have no idea. May have to email Apple.....
You can sync contacts and calendar to iCal/addressbook via google using mail for exchange, and various settings at the mac end. And have everything auto sync over the air automatically. This is much better IMO as I don't need to remember to sync, it just happens, and I can also get at my data anywhere by logging on to google.
And then iphoto, itunes and safari bookmarks are handled by nokia multimedia transfer.
If you google you'll find the info. I'm tired at the mo, but if enough people are interested, then I could blog a how-to.
(this is how I do it with my MBP and n97, so it does work)

Well there's a coincidence! I've just moved over to the dark side too, also with a Macbook Pro. 😊
Nah mate, you'll soon find that the dark side is known as Microsoft. Mac OS is the Jedi equivalent. Use the force- you know it makes sense.
Thanks for the headsup Accidental, will explore the MfE route - never used it before, and as I'm on gmail anyway, it might make things a bit easier, but if you do have time, a 'how to' would be most appreciated - by me anyway...
Its mainly syncing my contacts and address book with the phone, ical syncing would be good too. Multi media is no problem anyway, as you said, the Nokia MMT software does the trick.

Lol, that's just what my mate has said for the last two years. So far so good anyway. 😃
I'd also appreciate a 'how to' sync over google as I've had my Macbook Pro for some time and everything worked with my N95 and N96, but still waiting on the plug in's for the N97. It's killing me that I have to enter all calendar appointments twice and I just don't update my contacts at all now.
Go on - please, pretty please..... with sugar on it. 😃

Aye ok, I'll try and find some time later today to write it up. I'll post a link back here when it's done.

Thanks for that and I look forward to having my N97 back on track and up to date.

Right, I've finally started writing this up, I'll post a link once it's done.
OK, As promised:

Sorry it's a bit of a beast, just wanted to cover all the info to keep you informed (and for my own record incase I need to do it again). Want any more info, then just post here or in the comments. If you've info to add, then please post on the comments there so others can see it too.
Thanks for that , will have read through in a minute, but for info, I tried setting up Mail for Exchange following the instructions on Google Sync, but couldn't get it to work, kept saying there was a connection error.
Will take a look at these instructions and see where I'm going wrong!

Crikey - well done that man.
Great instructions, haven't followed them yet, just thought I say well done for a detailed write up. Had my Macbok Pro ( 13" ) for about two weeks - love it to bits, its great. Had a 15" G4 Powerbook before, and wouldn't go back to big screen, love the size and functionality of the MBP 13.
I've had the connection error a couple of times trying to force a sync - seems to be an issue with the google end (i've had the issue from the mac too), just try again. Once it's all setup I find it gets on with it fine on it's own.
Infact, i'll add a note about checking it's working using the log to the post...
Hmmm, made a start on the set up alst night, but got halted at one of the first hurdles - in Address Book, there is no option for 'Synchronise with Google.
In your write up, you did explain how to add this option, but this looked a bit complex for me, will have to re-read a couple of times. Or shall I just wait for Snow Leopard and hope that has it as standard?
It seems that I'm out of luck here.
I had never sync'd an iPod with my mac so there was no google option to sync with in address book. I have since sync'd with a shuffle and an 80 gb iPod and set the family ID to 10,001, but still no google option.
Any suggestions anyone?
Thanks,
John
Yeup, I kinda fell at the first hurdle too, no option to Sync with Google in the Adress Book options.
I did look at accidentals instructions, and there is a section on how to add this option, but looks a bit complicated.
BTW, I posted this same comments yesterday and it seems my posts is being moderated and still yet hasn't shown up....
Did you look at the link I posted to lifehacker about getting the option to appear?
Or is it the case that you don't have the plist file at all? In which case I could improve the instructions about creating one from the info I posted?
Hi,
I certainly looked through your instructions, which looked a bit complicated for me  so wasn't too confident over going about getting the option to appear in Address Book.
On anotehr note, I set up Apple Mail to work with the Gmail account - takaing into account what you were saying re not using the webmail interface for gmail, and set it up fine, but it seems that the messages were duplicating, as there is now an 'Inbox' and then anotehr inbox for Gmail, which of course are picking up the same messages. Is there any way to stop that from happening?
Trying to edit the account only really leaves the option of deleting all of it, rather than half of it, if that makes sense?
Thanks again for your efforts, really appreciated.

Tried replying to this earlier, but I think Forum was down?
I DID look at the instructions, but to be honest, it all sounded a bit too complicated for me
I did also set up Apple Mail though, considering your comments on not using the webmail interface and therefore gmail storing all the names you have ever sent an email to...
The problem I have with Mail, is that although the account sets up perfectly, it seems to show each message twice, and right from when I set up the account, over a year ago, so there are thousands of emails to download.
Mail shows Inbox with all the messages, and then another folder for Gmail, which shows all the messages all over again.
If you can post up some 'simpler' instructions, it would be muchly appreciated!
cheers.
Ok another update....
Looked at the instructions, and started off down the road of getting the 'Sync to Google ' option to appear. Went to the link posted up, and then followed the link there to download PList Editor, but once downloaded, the verification fails, so the disk image doesn't mount - can get that to run. Can't therefore edit that option, so back to square one!
I did use the guide from Lifehacker and downloaded plist. I did find the plist file that I needed and even created a backup just in case. that part of it was quite straight forward and your guide seemed to be clear enough.
Still, in-spite of that, I have no google option. I may just have to wait until Nokia decide to issue an iSync plugin for the N97.
If you have any further ideas then I'll happily try them. I've nothing to loose at the moment.
Thanks,
John
The IMAP google duplicating folders thing is fairly common. Google mail.app and gmail and I'm sure you'll find instructions to fix it. It's basically to do with setting the folders in mail to match the gmail ones. I can't remember the exact details, I set it up years ago!
AS for the plist, well on one machine I just plugged in an office mate's touch, and that sorted it. For the other machine I just used the plist from the first. So I'd just suggest to check you're putting the plist in the right place, or maybe google for more instructions on enabling it. You're probably not the first to have issues!
Another update:
Had to repair the hard disk, as everything I was downloading was failing to mount. Did the repair and then went and did the d/l of Plist Editor, which installed fine, and managed to get the 'Sync with Google' option appear in Address Book.
So, got Address Book to sync with google, but then there is no "sync' button, so not sure how it actually sync's - does it do it automatically?
Have also synced iCal with Google Calendar, so all that is now working fine.
THe N97 sync with Google: this is the tricky bit. Tried again to set up the profile according the instruction from Google Sync, entered in the right info in the right fields, but for some reason, it just won't connect. Keep getting the 'System Error' message, try again later .
Frustrating, as the Mac syncing with Google had worked faultlessly, only for the N97 to be the spanner in another wise well oiled slick running machine....
BTW_ hoping that my local Apple Re-seller has a copy of Snow Leopard in stock tonight when I get back to Jeddah. Was out last week in UK, but Saudi is about a week behind!
