I think I've been quite loyal to Symbian (and to Psion before them) but my patience is wearing thin since Symbian is so slow to attract developers so that we can synchronise with the major developer's software. Can someone please reassure me that Symbian itself has a future and that that future is shared with the 9210?
A Better OS for the Communicator?
I'd try and assure you that Symbian has a future if not only because it is the only real alternative to Microsnot's PocketPC.
If you look at who will be pushing Microsoft's smartphone (Sendo - a company that was going bust until Microsoft pumped a tonne of money into it) and compare that to those who are going to be making Symbian based smartphones (Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung to name but a few), you should be encouraged. Experienced, well established and trusted companies are behind Symbian right now.
Not only does Symbian offer a better OS for the purposes of a mobile device, but manufacturers are scared of going near Microsoft for fear of being locked into a contract that'll shaft them until their eyes pop out.
Looking at the 7650 and the plans that are afoot for the Sony-Ericsson P800, it seems to me that Symbian is a good horse to be backing right now.
As for the 9210, it has some developers (most of which are very good and produce excellent software), but it really never will have the kind of sales that the Symbian smartphones will attract.
Also, you have to look at the kind of people who will have bought the 9210. We are (please don't take offence), geeks, while the majority of 9210 users will be business people who don't have time to look at the internet for the latest news, download the latest games and swoon over the latest NIMs.
I'm not depressed. I have accepted that my 9210 will be 'bog standard' once the 9210i comes out and I accept that it will not be looking for the same mass appeal as the 7650. But, my 9210 does what I want and I love it!
palm has no future except for PDA use. But with more and more smartphones being developed, the choice is between PPC and Symbian. (I'm ignoring the proprietary OSes like Motorola's WISDOM Platform).
Symbian has had a long history, enough time to assure quality, and the Communicator proves that it works perfectly with Cellphones too. So I guess that ER7 will only be an improvement, and the P800 or 7610 will be even more reliable and integrate the phone feature even better.
A while ago I started believing that EPOC was dying. Palm and WinCE everywhere.
But some of the newest funky cool phones boast ER7, so I think there's a chance for Symbian to be a big player in the mobileOS (tm) game.

I read somewhere that ER6 is only a "thread" of the nokia communicator software ?
Does that mean that the Nokia OS and ER6 are behaveing like DOS and Win3.11 some years ago ?
Is this also true for the new ER7 found in the P800 and Nokia 7210?

Hmm.....I don't think I've read anything of the sort anywhere, I don't think it's likely.
I recall the 9110 actually runs a form of DOS before it loads GeOS though....

I know I've knocked Palm a lot on this site before, but they gone and bought the best OS programmers in the world (Be Inc. the creators of BeOS). So if the new Be influenced Palm OS isn't miles better than the earlier version I'll be very surprised.
I'd be interested to know what those gripes you have with Palm are because I am interested in the Handspring Treo communicator. Wouldn't use one of course, not until they come out with a colour screen and do faxes!
I'd like to be able to do all the things I currently do on my Palm (a Sony 770c clie) on my 9210, interfacing and working with Windows XP and office XP being top of the list.
I'll be getting my Clie 760C by the end of the week for basically the same reason. I need a business tool that I can use to communicate with with not too much difficulty. Seems like only a Palm based device will allow me to bridge the abyss between me the Mac OS X-using company owner and his Windows using staff. Seems like I'm back to using to handhelds to get my job dome. Groannnnnn
It's a shame..... but at least you're not going to be burdened with a Microsoft Brick!
