You'll know Tim Salmon if you've been around All About Symbian for a while, he's a regular commenter to news stories. And he now joins me in soft-launching a new audio podcast, a companion publication to my main Phones Show video podcast. Phones Show Chat episode 1, the pilot, is up now, with the main subjects being the Nokia N97 and E55/52. Note that it's a pilot and the audio quality is a little rough in places. Measures are in place to drastically improve things for episode 2. Be gentle in your comments, please!

I'm the colleague that had Tim's E51! I fully agree that since moving to the 5800 I miss the arrangement and size of the keypad. What I don't miss is the screen size which is greatly improved in the E52 isn't the lovely form factor found in the 5800.
I thought 'The Phone Show - Chat' went very well and was good to listen about older phones and see how technology has progressed. I look forward to the future of these shows.
The audio is atrocious. Unless you're telling me Tim Salmon lives inside a Tesla coil, in which case... great audio quality!
I like the new podcast, as i do the AAS one.
The only suggestion I have is that you could make the files a little smaller. I understand I might be a bit unusual, downloading podcasts over a 3G connection (using nokia podcasting)...
That being the case, i do think you could drop the bit rate down without any noticeable loss in quality. It is only voice, and there is always going to be a limit on quality down to the VOIP connection anyway.
Thanks for a great first show, I really enjoyed it, I already have a better insight into the current smart phone arena. As I have discussed many times with Tim, the iphone ticks so many boxes, and as a Nokia E51/HP iPAQ hx4700/Ricoh GX200 user, I have long been in search of the perfect convergance device, but for me the two fundamental shortcomings of the iphone are poor voice call quality (something that Nokia have always excelled at) and battery life, I think these are two no compromise areas for a device that is primarily a phone! Look forward to the next show.
Thanks all. For Phones Show Chat 2:
- Tim will be using his new posh mike
- I'll be using a pop-filter over mike (oops)
- as a result, I won't need to use such a high bit rate and the file will be smaller
8-)
Thanks Steve, it's good to have a podcast which looks at a wider range of platforms.
Now, if only the Podcast software on S60 had some facility to resume playback later, without leaving the music player running...
Well done
Please improve the quality
How regular is it going to be?
Is it going to affect the AAS weekly podvast in any way?
to Dubito:
The music player actually does have this facility, but only if you save the file in the folder E:\Podcasts. And only if you load it via the music player, instead of via the podcasting program....

As Steve says, the quality should be better next time - this was really just a Pilot/experiment to see if we/you wanted it to continue. I have to say that I enjoyed doing it and look forward to more. New microphone should be dropping on the doormat today - CAREFUL Postie!
We're aiming for weekly to start with and see how it goes - it certainly wouldn't be more frequently than this - if anything different, less. Depends on demand too - so let's have your feedback!
I can't speak for the AAS team but this is a *completely* different project and I can't see why, however successful it may become, it will in any way effect what the Main Players do 😉
Tim
As always, it's good to hear your opinions on the latest smartphones, and I usually agree with most of them.
One problem though was that the gain on the podcast was very low and I could not listen to it on my N series device. The normal AAS podcasts usually have low gains as well, but this was particularly low. Perhaps you could crank it up for future podcasts? Otherwise I can't listen to it on the tube! 😮
Cheers.
Yes, that's something else which will be fixed for PSC2 8-)
PSC1 was a pilot in so many ways!
