...another N97 user.

Its the weekend here in Saudi ( Thursdays and Fridays ) and am right now sitting in a local Costa Coffee shop, using their free wifi ( don't have internet at home, changing suppliers ) and just seen the geezer next to me using his N97.

In the two months or so since I've had mine, I have only come across ONE other N97 owner.

It's catching on. We'll be all over the place soon....

I haven't met a single person with an N97 yet so my phone is rather unique here... although I do live almost in the middle of nowhere lol 😃

on the N97 when I was in Japan recently.
In fact they first commented on how nice the N95 looked (since they're very rare sight in Japan) .. so I kept saying oh no .. thats my old phone .. from 2 1/2 years ago .. here's the new one .. Out comes N97 .. hmm!! looks great .. show a few movie clips .. photos etc .. and then the keyboard - that is always a cool trick.

Japan still has a number of phones with superior features compared to the N97 .. 8MP seems to be the high end for cameras though optical zoom is found in the Hitachi Wooo (I think I got the right number of o's in that) .. and 1-Seg TV is found everywhere. the screens are about the same size and resolution .. oled is making inroads on handsets too. clamshell design is still widely used and the flip&swivel design to give a full landscape view with a standard keyboard remains popular for media-centric devices.
The odd iPhone can be spotted .. but by and large Japan remains a feature-phone market all be it a very FULL feature set.

Amusement was getting a GPS dashboard screenshot while on a shinkansen .. 268Km/h ..

ahh *sigh*
i know what you're talking about man... I've always been that guy
I've yet to spot someone who has an N97 here in the UAE, even tho it's being heavily advertised outdoors

but before the N97 there were:
the Nokia 5800, other than my brother, i spotted 2 people with the 5800;

a couple of years back i bought myself a Nokia N71... no one else has seen it before or even heard of the N71... but it was great when i saw Dexter use it in season 2;

and finally, my Creative ZVM... i think i was the only person at the university (at that time) to have a Creative mp3 player, let alone the ZVM, which is weird because it kicks the ipod's ass to the curb (i think back then the newest one was the 4th gen or something)

so yeah... i'm ranting a bit here...

My wife has the 5800 and have to say, it's selling by the shed load here in Saudi, every time I go into a mobile phone shop, someone seems to be buying one. Seemingly very popular with women and students for some reason...

Ok, so I'm not travelling at 268km/h, but here's a screenshot anyway, of my current location. And literally am right here at the moment whilst writing this post...just for amusement purposes....

Yes, yes, yeeesss!

Oh God... you're almost there!

Sorry... got carried away there.

Seriously though, you may like to download the latest version of OVI maps here:-

http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/ovi-maps

Then go to C: and delete "cities" and "qf".

Then, and only then, with the phone outdoors and a clear view of the sky, start the Maps prog and select My location. Leave the phone for up to 5 mins to get an initial fix and download a map of the surrounding area.

Now you can connect your phone to OVI Suite or Nokia Map Loader and download the maps and voices you want.

On the phone Menu > Settings > Phone > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning server and then Positioning server use = Automatic. Access point = Contract internet or internet. Server address = supl.nokia.com

now you should get a lock a lot quicker. 😃

I thought there was something wrong with my menu's on Ovi Maps y'know. On previous versions, after it fired up and got going, and had connection to t'internet, to get to My Location, one had to press Options and select it from there.

So last night when I was in Jeddah, I kept pressin 'options' and the My Location just would not appear in the menu's, and I was thinking " I'm sure it used to be here...'

Until I pressed the red dot on the map.....d'oh. :redface::redface:

In Riyadh today, might delight you people with another screen shot, but to be honest, where we are in Riyadh, is a very barren landscape, and map screen shop will probably just be plain green , with nothing on it.....
