I'm Really Confused

Hi, i just got my n97 today and first of all i have to say that i am absolutely delighted with it... i haven't had any problems with it yet... however i am really confused....

I had a n95 before this and i had Garmin GPS installed which worked very well. Now i am looking at what is the best GPS / Map software for the n97. I have been reading up a lot about Nokia / Ovi maps. Can some of you experts please help me with the following questions:

1. Is Nokia Maps also called Ovi Maps (or are the completely different software)
2. What is the Map software that comes installed on the n97
3. What is the difference between Ovi Mobile and Ovi Global
4. Is this software free or do you have to pay for it (some is highlighted as free and other sections don't mention anything about it being free)
5. Can you use these maps as a proper GPS system
6. Should i be looking at some other GPS software instead

Thanks in advance...

1. Ovi Maps is the newer name for Nokia Maps. Ovi is Nokia's new brand for it's online services.

2. Your N97 will come pre-loaded with Maps 2.0. Performing a Software Update should offer up Ovi Maps 3.0 or you can head over to Nokia Beta Labs and download the latest beta version, 3.03 (highly recommended)

3. To be honest, I've not heard of Ovi Global. Ovi is Ovi.

4. The Ovi Maps application is free, as are the maps. What you pay for is the Navigation licence. Here in the UK, it's costs 1.50 for a 1 day licence, 6 for a 30 day licence or 52 for a 1 year licence. Your N97 should, depending on where you come from, come with a free 90 day licence. Activate it by going to the licence option in the menu system. The latest beta of Ovi Maps is being offered with a free 7 day licence too.

5. Yes, Maps is a fully featured GPS Navigation System.

6. There are a few other brands, some work with the N97, others don't. A little bit of searching on here will yield some results. However, Ovi Maps is a damned fine bit of software 😊

Hope that helps.

Cool, thanks a million... that really helps... i don't want to go over board setting my phone up the way i want it as i am waiting for the latest firmware to come out in October before i set up everything the way i want it, thanks again...
