Help!!

my phone C drive only has like 7mb free and thats after uninstalling loads of apps and getting rid of over 200 msgs, now ive looked on the memorry Details and it say "other 54MB"!! what the hell is other!!! and where are these "other" files so i can delete them!!

davecozens wrote:clear the cache from the browser and reset google maps

ok ive done this ive cleared the brower cache and i know have 17MB free =D however it still says there is 44MB being used by this "other" im not sure how to reset Google Maps Either??

I have 2 MB free and I have moved Every single app that was possible to redownload to mass storage with the exception of Boingo , that does'nt figure among the installed apps and I would really like to delete for good (any suggestions about that)?
I have only 10 messages left and Im getting desperate I can't download OTA updates anymore, and before I erased my messages I could not even open gMaps anymore because I got the message that I had to erase some data first.
Im seriously thinking of giving the N97 back, this just should not be happening in a month old phone sold at this kind of price.
Really a shame because without this glaring manufacturing fault I quite like my N97.

Do you have any suggestion for not making me hate Nokia and the moment I decided to buy this phone?
Please?

As I wrote I do have Gmaps installed , but I cant open the program anymore because I get the message that there is no memory available and that I should erase some files first.
But what should I erase more than what I already did?

The only time i have managed to recover a siginificent about of memory on c drive is to do a complete hard reset.

If you chose to do this then please remember to back up everything as most apps you have installed yourself into your phone will be lost.

This is my experience, i have HAD to do a hard reset about 5 times now - i'm not sure it's something that i would advise people to do - i have a lot of apps installed, some on the c drive and still have 40mb free space.

good luck

40MB???? I would be happy to have 4 !!
I have never done an hard reset on the n97 and I would of course prefer to avoid it, but why would you not recomend to do it?
Is'nt it possible to just back up all files into the mem. card and then after the reset re-install them on the phone?
Is there some other hidden bs I don't know of, hidden also in this usually straightforward process?

Nobody knows, probably they are things like Boingo that does'nt even figure among the installed apps and is therefore impossible to get rid of.
I would beg all those who managed to get 10+ MB of free ram to explain to us what they have done to achieve this result.
The only app left on my phone mempry are Gmail and Gmaps and I have a grand total of 4MB left.
I'm gonna try an hard reset as a last chance after which this phone is going back to Nokia so they can also change the camera lens, and if the problems continue I'll ask for another equivalent phone (maybe the Samsung OmniaHD?) or sell it on craigslist.
I'm getting sick of it

One thing that I have noticed is that if you use the OVI Suite (beta) to Sync your phone then a file is created on C: that contains all your text messages, which rather defeats the object of using E: (mass memory) for text storage.

You can navigate to it by using File Manager:-

C:\sync\temp\mms

I have stopped using OVI Suite because of this and use PC Suite, which doesn't create this file on C:, instead.

currently I've got 34.6mb free

new handset (so i guess a full on hard reset for most folks)
uninstall facebook. accuweather, iplayer, youtube, etc - reinstalled some to e:\
not installed googlemaps yet
removed the homescreen video from c:\videos (i think)
installed memoryup personal - http://davecozens.com/n97/moreinfo.cfm/id/129 - that's pretty nifty is that.

Thanks Wayee . with your program (the free edition) I managed to scavenge another 1,2 MB.
Better than a kick the balls , I guess.

Hi

Under c:\installation on my N97 there was a sisx file called mailforexchange_s60_5_0.sisx which is a wacking 1.7 mb - as an sisx file surely this is for optional installation and can be moved to mass memory?

Any ideas

Boothy

Yes boothy I moved both mail for exchange and Mfe to the mass memory and nothing negative happened , but I also do not use exchange as a mail client: if you do use it you can try to move it anyway, you can always move it back if the moving produces negative effects.

One question now (or maybe two):
Everybody keeps on recomanding of emptying the cache regularly specially if one often uses the browser; but I would like to know first HOW do you empty the cache; and second if this action would'nt also oblige me to reinsert all my log in data (for Gmail, for iGoogle, etc).

Does anyone have an answer to these 2 questions?

Hi plexus

To clear cache - open browser - select options > clear privacy data and select cache - The cache should only contain the stored images\data from previously browsed pages to speed up process next time you use those web pages - it should not effect any of your settings

Boothy

Edit: It may be a good idea to change homepage to something very basic - I have noticed that the vodaphone (in my case)default homepage knocks up half a meg in cache before you start browsing - Boothy

Hi plexus
All I've done is keep the c drive as clean i.e. empty as poss
anything and everything is saved and moved to mass memory all my messages are kept on the E drive and the browser's cache I clear one a week it sounds like a pain but a hard reset does this phone a world of good at the mo I'm running with
c: at 29Mb
RAM: at 36Mb

36Mb phone memory?
Wow; the max. I ever had was 32.
The minimum zero!
Now after 2 resets and the installation of the latest ROM (v. 12 ) I have 30.2 and it's working great, but the first month or so was so bad that I went back to use my old HTC TouchHD and after a very short stint with an iPhone 3GS I had it exchanged with an HTC Hero. (Yes now I have 3 phones and only one SIM card)

I also think that it's terrible the way Nokia messed up the voice dialling function.
My old N95 and N95 8gb had the best voice dialing apps ever seen in any telephone before or after, it hardly ever missed, but trying to add more (useless) voice function , Nokia rendered this function all but unusable in the N97.
What a shame

Like I said I keep her tidy have to the N97's C: drive is really bad 40 odd texts a few emails and the thing gives out that stupid message "memory full delete some files" I mean how bad is that I never even counted the amount of text and junk I used to stick on my N95 8Gb I was stupid to think the N97 was the N95 with a bit more i.e. qwerty and touch but no It scratches its self the GPS fly's around the map like a nut and s60 v5 really should of been more touch friendly I'm left handed and the side scroll bar is on the wrong side for me I'm always covering the screen with my hand Its hard to find your music when you cant see but I'm not giving up on it I had the N95 when that first came out and boy that was just as bad alot worse really and by the sounds of what I've read v20 should help alot ( I hope )

Sorry about the really stupid question but where do i check my memory????:redface:
