There's a nice long video from SymbianWorld, recorded at Nokia World 09, looking in detail at the upcoming Nokia N97 v20 firmware update (kinetic scrolling in all lists, more memory and much more), the same as the launch firmware in the N97 mini. The video is embedded below in high quality mode, for your convenience.
Read on in the full article.
This is the firmware the N97 should have been launched with.
Nokia makes it seem that these "new" features are new in the cell phone world. Kinetic scrolling, album art, etc.....lol.
Wake up and smell the coffee and next time release a device without having "beta" firmware on it.
When he is holding his N97 mini with the chrome ring in that light it really looks like iPhone 😊
Steve any word if those improvements will come to 5800?
I can only agree with Adiron. Kinetic scrolling needs the third firmware upgrade to be implemented (v.12 still not available for my unbranded N97 though) and these nice transition affect available on all the touchscreen devices but the Nokia ones need to be added manually by hacking the phone... Something is going wrong at Nokia...
Ups, I meant Candido... Guess I am still half asleep...
Well, Apple also is making a big fuss about the 'new' copy and paste function in Iphone OS 3.0 that is already available elsewhere in the smartphone world. Everybody is the same when it is 'marketing'.
Except Apples cut and paste isn't a text based only. Its desktop like that can cut and paste objects like pictures and sounds too. And when you do copy and paste text, it keeps the format like font/text size etc...
I agree that kinetic scrolling should have been in the firmware at launch and with the extra memory & C:\ tweaks... this would have been a much nicer phone I had bought in June. I'm sure this would cut a substantial amount of the negative reviews with the constant barrage of "no kinetic scrolling / double click single click / using a scroll bar" issues with the great hardware but clunky UI. Oh and ofcourse and the "Nokia is doomed" which is hilarious to read.
Nevertheless, Iphone 2g buyers would have wished for the Iphone 3.0 software at launch, so that it can be functionally comparable to Symbian 60 touch products. Nevertheless, people ate that up so a little kinetic can't hurt.
Apple makes anything seems like a new feature. Just talk to any of their fanboys, who laps up every single lie Apple caughs up.
And the net is SO FULL of all the cheers and celebrations about the kinetic scrolling! I can't believe my eyes, tweets, blogs, everything - I swear, if it was the latest, most revolutionary invention connected to the N97. Blaaaaargh!
And, it seems like they're not gonna shrink the button bar on the side in landscape mode. :/ Oh well.
Any idea on these features making it to the 5800 (finally) plus a better home screen?
Any idea what is the official release date of N97 Firmware 2???
Anuj
I am hoping for these features to arrive on the 5800 as well, however I have this feeling that, because the 5800 is so much cheaper Nokia might choose not to update the 5800 as well, to drive people towards upgrading their handsets for newer models. Recall, the 5800 is a bit less than half the price of an N97 (at least in the UK) and probably a lot less profitable for Nokia - it was released primarily to widen the user base for S60v5, and the customers Nokia wants to take care of are really the high-spending N97 buyers.
In short, there might not be a further update for the 5800, for business rather than technical reasons.
On another hand, if the 5800 is essentially identical internally to the 5230 (WiFi module aside) then we might hope to see some of the 5230's features in a newer firmware.
I really appreciate that Nokia launches these features when their thinking that they are ready. I prefer to have a kinetic scroll function which is working like all the other features provided by this awesome phone, than having a buggy one only to say that's inside.
No comment on whether copy/paste works in the browser. It's a little ironic after all the criticism of the iPhone not having copy/paste that the current Nokia flagship cannot copy from a web page just when the iPhone can 😊
LOL, when Apple finally add a camera flash and multi-tasking then that will be the latest thing too.
Does anyone know if V2 firmware will allow all the kinetic scrolling and stuff to be switched off for those of use who prefer to work without it? Currently you can disable transition effects in themes, I'm keeping my fingers cross that it will be the same for the kinetic scrolling. I look forward to the stability of the new firmware, not so keen on the tarty stuff.
Apple have to be applauded though. They hype their devices up so much and thanks to the ipod and mac's success, the 1st generation iphone (which was awful) managed to shift bucketloads.
Well prepared operating systems using dated technology means Apple makes a bundle. The 1st ipod was hardly innovative. And when are they going to start using removable batteries?
Well, that didn't take long. I mean, how can an announcement about new N97 FW provoke such a heated Apple v Nokia debate (for the umpeenth time)??

The first follow up to the article was a hypocritical dig at Nokia, hardly surprising when apparently content Apple-lovers feel the need to post in Symbian websites (and any other vaguely technology related website).
It's interesting how Apple as a company attract people who feel the need to tell everybody else that their way is the only way. Perhaps a pychologist could take a look at them.
It's good to see the improvements and good we have an approximate release date. Improving the 'fluidity' of the N97 experience certainly seems to be a goal for the v2x firmware and I for one am happy about that.

Fair point. I just wish people could be grown up enough to acknowledge that all (or both, in this case) platforms have their merits as well their downsides. Unfortunately, many posters seem to view these threads as some sort of p*ssing contest, which becomes a tad tedious after a while....
Anyway, I hope the N97 update process is an improvement on the E90 update, which I had to give up on after 20 failed attempts...

What to say then about the iphone-haters that populate every blog that writes about the iphone, most of the times quoting Nokia has an example?
Nokia fanboys are getting every bit has annoying has the worse apple fanboys

Dunno, don't read iPhone forums/blogs. Don't wan't an iPhone, therefore not interested in talking about them.
Well, thats nice.
How about fixing all the bugs too? Seriously, how did they manage to make a phone that locks up when disconnecting a call. Or at random times.
I notice in the first 10 seconds of the video where the user is bringing up the software version screen that the dialler is still missing the letters on the keypad.
While I can understand Nokia's reason for leaving them off, some banks and other utility companies use passwords (yes, I said passwords) that must be typed in using the dialler. It is difficult unless you are used to typing in the digits or are looking at another person's phone to remember what letters are on which number on the keypad.
Why has Nokia left the letters off on the touch screen phones' dialler?
you only see the letters in the touch keypad when you are in 'typing mode'
what you see in the movie is just the dailer and there are no real phone numbers with leters in them.
try to input somthing in a webpage with the touchpad and you will see letters
I hope they improve contact view options !!! "NAME and NUMBER "option is a must have!!! For god sake... 😡:icon13:
So right, I missed a proper copy/paste function at my N97 quite a few times already. Can't even copy a link from fring to a browser to open it... And now the iPhone can copy/paste about everything...

That's exactly the problem. When I call my cellphone provider (Orange) they ask me, for example to enter the first and third letter of my password. Suppose my password was "nokia" to answer that I'd have to enter 65 on the dialler.
However in order to give you that example I had to look at the keypad of another phone to realise that the letter N is on the 6 key and K is on the 5 key. I have the same problem when doing this for real because Nokia do not display the letters when I bring up the dialler in the middle of making a call.
I agree about the letters. I'm with Orange too and it takes me a while to think of my password because there's nothing to remind you what character relates to what number.
