Just got my 2nd N97 today took 1st 1 back as Gps didnt work and was crashing alot ,anyway i have my new 1 and the Gps doesnt seem to be working on this 1 either. I just want to know if there is any kind of tips or guide lines with it? i remember the N95 wanted the slide to be open and in clear view of the sky to connect thats why i ask, or is my 2nd N97 as much use as the first? thanks

You may like to download the latest version of OVI maps here:-

http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/ovi-maps

Then go to C: (phone memory) or E: (Mass memory) and delete the files "cities" and "qf" using the built in File Manager in Office.

Then, and only then, with the phone outdoors and a clear view of the sky, start the Maps prog and select My location. Leave the phone for between 5 and 20 mins to get an initial fix and download a map of the surrounding area.

Now you can connect your phone to OVI Suite or Nokia Map Loader and download the maps and voices you want.

On the phone Menu > Settings > Phone > Application settings > Positioning > Positioning server and then Positioning server use = Automatic. Access point = Contract internet or internet. Server address = supl.nokia.com

You should also check the following:-

Maps > Settings > Internet > Network destination > select your internet connection.

now you should get a lock a lot quicker.

Question.... Before this, was your integrated GPS also malfunctioning with the "positioning app"? I mean mine just does not work.

Im at a loss to figure out whether clearing sorting out the Maps application would help me and my problem with the integrated gps not working with the positioning application.

This is Genius.

I was all set to send my phone away to be repaired because the GPS was not working. Seems to be fine now. Quite why the N97 "help" line could not have suggested this.

Thanks!

Julian

Glad it's helped. 😊

I've updated my original post to include this:-

You should also check the following:-

Maps > Settings > Internet > Network destination > select your internet connection.

I found that my Internet was blank when I checked the first time.

Thanks for adding to my reputation on this one. :icon14:

When you say you don't have Internet on your phone does that mean you do not have a data plan included on your contract?

If so, you may want to disable AGPS in Positioning as this downloads just a few kb's of data. It will make your lock slower I'm afraid though.

You can download the maps you require for free from your PC by installing Nokia Map Loader from here:-

If you have already installed Ovi Maps from Nokia Beta Labs, as per my previous post, then go to item 3, Map Loader.
