N-Gage - Why Bother?!

I feel I have to rant a little here, so I apologise in advance! 😉

Last week, I contacted Nokia (don't) Care to request that my N-Gage games be transferred from my N95 to my N97. Simple process, one would have thought. Ha!

Firstly, it took over a week for them to return my contact. Then, I am told that I have to install all the games on my new handset and try activating with the original codes. Fair enough, I think, until I find out that of the 4 games that I have (PS Golf, Hooked On: COTD, FIFA 08 and Mile High Pinball) only two of them are compatible with the N97 (PS Golf & FIFA 08).

Now, I got, like most others, FIFA 08 when Nokia gave away thousands of copies of the game just after N-Gage went live. And for the life of me, I can't find the activation code. In fact, I think it was in a text that got deleted. Similarly, Mile High Pinball was received FOC courtesy of the Need For Speed promo they did. Again, no record of the activation code.

PS Golf & COTD were bought and paid for.

So Nokia (lack of) Care tell me that PS Golf is good to go (which it is) and that I need to install COTD. However COTD isn't compatible with the N97, so I can't do that. And Nokia (fail to) Care tell me that it's "tough doo doo". They won't even allow me to change it to a different, N97 compatible, game. So, I paid 6 for something that won't work on a supposed uniform platform (N-Gage).

And then they tell me that they can't transfer free games, even if I had the activation codes!!

So, I've gone from 4 games to 1 and a lot of the new stuff isn't even N97 compatible, and now the rumours are starting that N-Gage is going to be dropped.

So, why bother??

Big shame.

That is unfortunate. I looked at the N-Gage games but they have left me cold. I guess I already have a Nintendo DS.

I have installed vSun in this last week and that has been fun. I have not used it a lot yet as the T9 KB interface is irritating with my big fingers so I ordered a Zeemote from ebay, assuming I don't get ripped off of course.

I have to admit that the N-Gage content is pretty lame. If you want to play games get a Nintendo-DS or some other dedicated machine.

I want my N97 to do some real number-crunching and data handling...

Give me at least a basic-language interpreter and a powerful e-book reader (multi-window if possible).

I'd also like to see a DOS emulator so that I can run some other languages (PROLOG and XLISP) to do AI applications. I have JIProlog but it can't even load files so it's little more than a toy.
