I am not sure if this is possible. My phone needs to be on silent/vibrate alert all the time. However I have one contact with whom I would like to associate a non-silent ring tone.
I have turned on silent mode through phone/edit/preferences. Surely this will apply to all incoming calls? Is there any way I can override the silent mode for one particular contact?
Yes, it does apply to all contacts.
Maybe what you can do is create a couple of calling groups in the address book and then move the one person to one of the groups.
You can then change the ringtone for a whole group.

Apologies if I'm being a bit slow here - but I'm struggling to do it! I can't find an option for sorting into groups as such - but of course I can easily arrange them into different files. However I can't find the method for associating ringtones with different Contacts files.

Ok guys,
if you go into your address book and then tap on the top right hand menu (probably 'All'😉
Then tap 'Edit Folders'. You can now add or delete folders.
When you have the folders you want go back to the contacts list and tap on the contact you want to move (as far as I know you have to do each contact one at a time).
Then tap on top right hand menu (probably says 'unfiled'😉 when you are in the contact.
You can then choose the folder you want to move them to.
Actually, I haven't found how to change the ringtone for each folder yet but I am sure this is possible. It said somewhere in the SE documentation about it. I will have a look tonight.

Thanks Pete - I had got them sorted into folders (or files as I called them above). There is an option to have different ringtones for voice and data calls - but can't see anything beyond this. Will be interested in your findings.
what you are trying to do looks very difficult.
what we need is an emergency tel. number ring feature in the phone. I don't think it has ??
ok here a suggestion but its gonna be a bit tedious.
creative a silent wave file as a ringtone (ie that makes no sound)
apply it to every contact except the one u want an alert from and assign them a proper ringtone.

This is a good idea. It would be easier if allows us to change the default ringtone - then you can assign this 'silent' ring tone as default ring tone, which would mean you don't have to assign a ringtone for each contact.
