Well,
That's two nokia service centres I've tried, explaining that the GPS signal is very weak and can you change it. I explained I've heard on the forums that some people can get their antennae changed in 10 minutes.
After consulting with their engineers, they say "10 minutes? Sounds like a firmware update TBH and that the GPS hardware is on the circuit board"!!!!
Am I saying something wrong?
They all want me to send the phone back to Nokia.
I used the words "Service Bulletin" and known issue. If you're not having much luck you should try ringing the head company (forgotten their name) that authorises repairs. The number for the N97 hotline is in Daves thread about getting a new one, or the scratched lens...or the blimey nokia just called me.. he has a lot of threads 😉
i sent mine back, 2 weeks later it came back fixed.
long time to wait, but at least the gps is fixed now.
I know munkii, but I'd rather not send it back. If I can get it fixed in two hours I'd rather do that. i don't mind waiting two weeks to have the repair sorted but I don't want to be without my phone for two weeks.
I had pretty much the same thing with two Service Centers in The Netherlands. They were not even aware of the the GPS problems.
I asked them to fix the GPS antenna. They also initially responded with the firmware update. I then mentioned that this would probably not help, that I'd probably either need the GPS antenna fixed, or the phone exchanged for a working model.
The Service Centers can't exchange the phone, this has to be done by Nokia, whereas Nokia only points to Service Centers to resolve problems. So I asked to replace the antenna. Then both Service Centers indicated they do not have these spare parts, as they are not available yet.
They offered me to send it back to Nokia, so they can have a look at it. It could take 4 weeks before I'd get it back! :S They offered me to update the firmware though.. But even for flashing the firmware (which would probably be useless, as 1. it doesn't fix the problem, and 2. there is no newer firmware available than what is already installed). However, they couldn't even do that while I was waiting.. I would still have to leave the phone...
Argh... I was in contact with someone from Nokia, but she doesn't respond to my emails anymore...
And I still love the N97 if you don't take the camera, GPS antenna and low application memory into account.... 😞
