Nokia 5800 XpressMusic gets another updated; Firmware version reaches 31.0.008
Nokia has issued a new update for its all-touchscreen 5800 XpressMusic smartphone. Once you’ve pushed the trigger and installed the latest firmware (version 31.0.008), you’ll see few changes on the device, including:
* Ovi Maps 3.1
* Updated Ovi Store client (to version 1.05)
In addition, the phone should be snappier after the update, freeing more RAM as a result.
As usual, we advise you to backup prior to proceeding to the firmware upgrade. You can do that either using Nokia Software Updater or over-the-air by typing *#0000# from the dialer and then “Check for updates.”

Is there a full changelog available?
I was surprised that after the FW upgrade, my internal memory had been wiped and the handset asked me to choose country and set date/time?
(However, my memory card is burst and maybe user-data-retention requires a card inserted during the FW upgrade process?) Anyone know?
I did the update on 3 5800s... One was already running 30.0 (after being set to Euro 2 generic weeks ago). The other 2 were running 11.00 (SFR custom) and I set them to Euro 2, rebooted, updated to 31.x and all configuration was preserved... on all 3 phones.
The BIG improvement I found is that GPS is MUCH faster to acquire lock. Maps is much more comfortable to use. And camera now can geotag pictures directly (so no need to add the Beta Labs LocationTagger application).
All in all, I love it!

Thanks for the quick reply. Did they all have memory cards inserted during the upgrade? (My 5800XM didn't as the memory card is faulty/corrupt)
ggravier wrote:Yes they did. 😊
Well then, perhaps we have learned something new - user data retention (during FW flash) only works if you have a memory card inserted in the handset?
why nothing for t-mobile UK? so irritating

Your options are as follows:-
(a) Hassle and nag T-Mobile to approve v31
(b) De-Brand your handset and get V31 yourself (and invalidate your warranty!)
Hi, anyone know when there might be a V30 firmware update for the NAM version of 5800?
I wish Nokia were a bit more informative about when and where these updates might happen.

Product code 575581 here and still waiting for v30, let alone v31
So why not simply debrand your phone? Set it to 0558982 (Euro-1 multi-language) Just get NSS from http://www.b-phreaks.co.uk/ and use your standard Nokia USB cable.

Some folk don't want to invalidate their warranty by de-branding.
And I can understand that very well. I hate that some operators, just so that they can stuff the phone with their own junk, decide to free up space by putting old drivers, or keeping an old release of the firmware.
10.X was EXTREMELY slow (to the point of being almost unuseable) at getting a GPS fix.
30.X and 31.X are fantastic. In fact just as good as my older E71... and my external Bluetooth GPS (which I don't need anymore).
I decided to forget about warranty. The original product code is written on the inside of the phone. If I ever DO need to bring it in for warranty, then I will set the PC back to what it was before, and reflash the latest firmware for that PC.
alright, down here in Australia, these updates just seem too slow. I think its time i debranded my phone.... but i'm not exactly sure how to go about doing that?
Is there a thread that outlines the risks involved and a guide to debrand it to? Ahh.... seems like a major task.
I'm now having a problem with the Music Player after upgrading to v31 and hard reset. The volume control just doesn't work!
Funny thing is that everything was working perfectly after the upgrade. Just one night I decided to hard reset it (for no particular reason really :con?) and after that the music player just started to act up.
Anyone's experiencing the same?

Just so everyone is clear on the warranty position with product-code changes...
Every time you run NSU, your handset IMEI, FW version and product code are uploaded & recorded on Nokia's servers.
Even if you change the product code back and re-flash to the original FW (if possible - downgrading FW is not easy), it is too late, your warranty is still void.

Debranding is very simplae and there's a detailed sticky thread in the N95 forum.
However, debranding threads NEVER fully warn readers of the warrany implications.
@ kucing_kampung
Sorry to say , but now you might have a real reason to do a hard reset :
