The Phones Show 90/PSC 4

7 replies · 2,170 views · Started 16 September 2009

For completeness (and, yet again, to prove to ne'ersayers that I'm not in anybody's pocket), The Phones Show 90 is now out, with almost no Symbian content whatsoever (it's mainly about the HTC Hero). However, just to keep this news item on topic, Phones Show Chat 4 is also out, and this has large chunks of Nokia E71, Opera Mini 5 and musings on new qwerty phones.

hi steve, well done again. one thing that noticed you saying was that the hero did not have a landscape keyboard in many apps. i found this very surprising as i have tried a few hero roms and they all had it. i know that hacked roms are not the same as official ones, but even my magic had it on its official rom. are you sure that you didnt miss this feature? one thing android has to work on is that it doesnt automatically pop up the keyboard when you open a text box. maybe you just needed to press the text box to open the keyboard?

i find that the youtube player is much nicer to use vs the n97 and over wifi the videos look great on android. as bbc player is restricted to your country i dont think it should be a knock against android that it cannot play videos (though it would be nice if we could all have access to it). there are also a few free file explorer apps on the market that work very well, an d unless the ovi store has done a complete 180, i dont see how you can compare it to the android market. there are many free and paid apps that enhance the functionality of android, while the ovi market is filled with games and ringtones mainly. i know there are many apps available in ovi, but when i had the n97 i found it very tough to find anything that i wanted to download from it

video on the n86 does look impressive, though. hands down any nseries device does a better job at taking pics and recording videos but i dont think one is better than the other for viewing the info. thanks again for the show, it was great

Not bad Steve, felt a little rushed, but I guess it's a limited time slot...

Really worth getting the firmware update that is already available for the Hero, since it improves the speed quite a bit. Probaby came out in the UK, the day after you finished recording...

Also, no official iPlayer (yet), but unofficial BeebPlayer available as a free download from the marketplace. Has a good interface and works well. Does not feel like a hack etc.

Which brings me to my next point (as mentioned by last poster). You did not make mention of how many great Apps there are on teh Marketplace. Super easy to use/download and very very large portion free. Even the paid ones are mostly a couple of pounds. Fantastic and totally different from the Ovi experience. It probably does not have as many apps as the iPhone yet, but probably has a much greater proportion of free ones. The momentum on this front is huge. I'm really impressed having used the iPhone App Store and then the Nokia one.

I think the pricing model on Symbian is going to have to change if it is going to compete.

Apart from the actual home screens, I find the keyboard works fine landscape in most apps.

Also, have a quick download, play and cancel for refund within 24 hours of CoPilot (Total 25 for UK) and then remind me once again why you like Ovi Maps so much 😊

Suggest you check out Astro (free file manager from Marketplace).

There's also an alternative browser if you don't like the standard one (which I think is fine), called Steel (also free).

My current quick play game which has me hooked is called 4everfall. Very simple, very addictive.

Finally, really nice task list app called Astrid. Works with the built in calendar and dontforgetthemilk (Also free).

Did I mention the great free stuff...

Zuber

Yes, sod's law!

Oh quite, but it's not official. And I do like reviewing things out of the box. What would be good would be for me to do a head to head between App Stores. Now there's an idea....

greater proportion of free ones. The momentum on this front is huge. I'm really impressed having used the iPhone App Store and then the Nokia one.

Though as I was trying to say in my feature earlier this week, most people only really need a handful of good apps, not 100s of smaller ones....

Most apps? I tried some of the obvious ones, e.g. Calendar, and their interfaces stayed portrait. I'm guessing everything added by HTC doesn't rotate, everything in core Android does.

I like Ovi Maps solely because it's on every device. Makes things a lot easier for everyone having something omni present. 8-) I'm quite sure CoPilot produces better routing!
