Google Sync: can anybody suggest a solution?

This is going to be a long post; sorry.

Okay a few days ago I reported that Google Sync via Microsoft ActiveSync was working well on my UK T-Mobile E71-1. Well it is but it isnt! Ill detail.

I can happily synchronise my email, contacts and calendar to and from Google and the E71 using Mail for Exchange in push mode. Its fast and reliable. Im using BirdSteps SmartConnect with one connection group and two access points (our home WLAN and the T-Mobile GPRS / UMTS service, in this order). Im using the latest version of SmartConnect. No matter how much I fiddle with the settings, if the device is using the 3G connection, SmartConnect has always refused to upgrade to the home WLAN when I get home. This annoys me: I want to use our WLAN connection when its available, because its fast and saves battery.

One work around could be to get my Mail for Exchange installation to connect to Google Sync every so often. It connects, synchronises, disconnects, so the next time it connects itll use the WLAN if available

except Google Sync cannot cope with this. Although the log reports a complete synchronisation, it misses stuff usually email, sometimes changes to my calendar.

At the moment, my best compromise is to use the vanilla email application for my Gmail with no timer (so I just connect and disconnect manually) and set up Mail for Exchange to synchronise my calendar and contacts on a regular basis.

So any ideas for a fuss-free experience? Changing SmartConnects On better connection to Disconnect has made absolutely no difference whatsoever in the past.
