Why don't you start a poll with 20 or so of the best smartphones available now and let the people vote. Make it a sticky on your homepage and let the people decide.
Please don't just list all Nokia phones in this poll 😉 😊

People, how can you even include unreleased phones in your Top 5 lists? Idiotic.
Steve, If you decide to wait for the "Coming Soon" phones, you might as well give up on coming up with a Top 5 list. There will always be exciting & better phones "coming soon" which will make the current lot look a little less exciting.
I was surprised you even considered the N96. Between the N85, N86 & N96 - There's nothing really in the N96 to give it any sort of edge. With the N86 in the list, the N96 didn't stand a chance.
I don't get it why everyone has become scared of liking Non-Touch screens now a days. I doubt and hope they'll ever go out of fashion. I hate carrying around a 3"+ screen monster with me. I like the small & easily handled with one hand phones. I really hope Nokia and the other's don't give up on feature rich non-touch screens. I would really like to see the N86 at the top, It definitely is one of the candidates.
Thanks all for the continuing comments. I've added three more short summaries to the original post now (Bold, E90, 5800) if you're interested...
And yes, I know that there will *always* be *something* around the corner, but in this case the groundswell was just so huge that I couldn't bring myself to write a top 5 list that was going to be out of date within 2 weeks.
My top 5:
1. 5800
2.
3.
4.
5.
Nothing else comes close, incredible device at that price. If the 6700 Classic had WiFi then I would probably have that in my top 2.
Oh, and Sapporobaby has been made to look stupid again. When will he learn?

Absolutely! Touch = bloat. A US led fashion for bulky pocket-bulgers and jacket-saggers. I looked at 6700 classic, gorgeous neat little device. Give me Wi-Fi on that and its mine.
Unregistered wrote:You forgot to mention the Satio which will be released and available 12th October.Symbian 5th Edition

Arm Cortex A8 @ 600Mhz
12.1 MPx with Xenon and LED flash
AGPS
112 x 55 x 13.3mm
126g
+ The rest of the culprits found in high end smartphones
He did mention the Satio:
There's also the Sony Ericsson Satio, of course, but that's shot itself in the foot before it's even started by including a battery that just gets you through the first half of day one.
So it looks like it will be something of a failure. More than 5mp on a phone is just stupid anyway, the optics aren't big enough to truly house 8mp quality. Sure, you'll get the resolution, but it won't be the same.
Where is Nokia N82 in this list? Dont you think it deserves to be one among this list?
Actually, the iphone can easily stream music on the background, via Safari. Some apps started already doing that...press "background" and the music starts coming from safari instead of the app itself.
And Steve, you heard about push notifications, right? Chat clients DO work in background through it now...

5800 is great value for money phone but I doubt if it's the BEST smartphone in the world!!!!
It's very subjective but I will consider only the "available" phones in my top 5:
1. N86
2. iPhone 3GS
3. Blackberry Curve 8900
4. E71
5. Samsung OmniaHD
ashu wrote:5800 is great value for money phone but I doubt if it's the BEST smartphone in the world!!!!
It is the best phone in the world for my needs, which is the most important thing. Name any other phone and I will tell you why I prefer the 5800. I feel that the X6 will be an improvement when it appears, and possibly the N97 mini, but the 5800 will still beat both on VFM.
The best phone in the world is the one that best suits your needs.
What about the Samsung i8510?
It's a great phone!
I've installed many apps trouble free, and it's hacked too.
As for Samsung's support, I can't really comment on that as I haven't attempted to update it lately, the last time PC Studio said it was up to date.
Thanks.
I do a lot of video & photo shooting and uploading, and this weekend I videoblogged & photoblogged a film festival with a borrowed N86 - I've been mobile videoblogging for years with several different Nokias, and this is far and away the best of them. I actually like the design - I'm not really so much of a touchscreen fan - and the sound quality with headphones is pretty decent. Battery is very ropey, though - am constantly charging.
Last time I borrowed one, before the firmware upgrade, I had all kinds of trouble with email and pixelpipe uploading, C drive getting filled up with sent files that didn't show up in the file manager - but this time (not sure if it's the upgrade or whether I had a dodgy phone before), it's worked like a dream, and the camera seems even better - really great quality videos and photos. Plus it has apps that work and do what I need, rather than a whole bunch of toy apps to waste time with. I will be sorry to give it back. It's definitely my #1 choice at the moment.

Yeah but try browsing in Safari after that - audio goes !!. No need to defend the indefensible. You should not pay so much for a device only to be dictated to. Dont let yourself be brainwashed by branding, ad bombing and aesthetics, you are the customer, you should not have to jump through hoops to get a feature that is available on much cheaper devices - my Sony Ericsson c510 is only 79 unlocked but it runs NimBuzz/Skype in background for crying out loud !!.
Being a fanboy of any product or company (yes that includes Nokia, Google not just apple) is a grave disservice to self. Dont let Apple etc get away with it. Vote with your wallet.

Unregistered wrote:And Steve, you heard about push notifications, right? Chat clients DO work in background through it now...
but push notification is not multi-tasking. This relies on an additional centralized server (who knows what they do with your data at this point). Adding an extra level of redirection is wasteful as it requires additional server resources !😡. Same goes for push email but at least emails dont have the frequency level of IM.

Well, since everyone else is I suppose I should do my top 5:
1.) HTC TyTn II
2.) HTC Hero
3.) Nokia N97
4.) Nokia N95 8GB (my dad's work colleague just gave him one for free as he didn't like it and I've fallen in love with it 😃. To be completely honest, if it happened before I'd bought the Hero, I would've stuck with the N95)
5.) iPhone 3GS
Still got my TyTn II, but unfortunately it stopped working with sim cards out of the blue a few months ago, and it's just too battered up to bother repairing anyway, so it's staying sat there as a PDA or a media device now, not decided yet...
I think that one of the phones that would be in any top 5 of mine would be the Sony Ericsson K800i.
It's showing its age now, but there's still not many better camera phones at 3.2mp, it even has a xenon flash!
The proprietary OS hinders it a little bit, but I always found it to be very solid and it did the job capably. Just the fact that it still sells pretty well is testament to how well it's done. I'd happily get my old one back and use it daily, anything is better than the KU990 Viewty I have at the moment!

so, to those iPhone owners or testers, before I wast my money on the 3GS: what would happen if I choose to perform simultaneously the 3 following tasks:
1) I download my daily podcasts on WLAN with Podcaster/RSS player or whatever application that avoids to do this with iTunes while at the same time, I
2) listen to music with Ipod app, while at the same time
3) receive an text or an email and let's say I need to reply to it right away
can I do that ?
or alternatively can I also substitute 2) with receiving a call; and 3 with taking notes (while I keep downloding my podcasts)
not that many instances where I'd REALLY need multitasking but that's definitely one and if that's not possible with iPhone it's a sad limitation...

This and your other post make great points and the fact that you do not hide behind the "unregistered" moniker lends even greater credibility to your posts. Your "vote with your wallet" statement is probably the most important in this entire thread. Multi-tasking the iPhone way or multi-tasking the Symbian way has is probably of little consequence to purchasers of iPhones or N97's. These minds were made up from the very beginning. Any additional features is just gravy. Considering the volumes in which the iPhone is selling, it is apparent that there are millions completely happy with the way it handles tasks while the exact same can be said of Symbian phones. Neither phone is perfect which is why I carry one of each (got rid of the N97 as no matter how much Steve tried to talk it up, the phone is still a dog), iPhone and the N86 (probably the best N series I have owned). Both complement each other depending on the tasks required. The iPhone completely blows the N86 for many things while the same can be said for the N86 against the iPhone. In may world I have room for both while a myopic few in this thread hide behind being anon and pontificate about how much they know.
Top Five:
1. Toss up: iPhone (for daily usage) / N86 (hot standby, and always in my pocket)
2. N95 (game changer. helped the iPhone to become what it is)
3. 2110i (put Nokia on the map and a friend still has a working model)
4. Original Communicator (from the movie The Saint. Nokia innovation all the way)
5. N82 (great camera, completely underrated phone)

The fact that you post under your real name lends even greater credibility to your posts......
Oh wait, you hide behind a silly pseudonym so you are equally as anonymous as 'unregistered', but you are 10 times more sanctimonious. You have zero credibility. And you were hopelessly wrong about multi-tasking.
Switch on sport-tracker and then stick it in the background anyone?
God I love chumming. It brings all the scum to the surface to feed....
@ sapporobaby
The fact that "iPhones are selling by the millions" does not necessarily mean that (first-time) owners are happy with the lack of multi-tasking on the iPhone. As you are so fond of pointing out with the N97 sales figures, numbers don't tell the whole story. Any iPhone user who tries to use an iPhone in the same way as we Nokia/Symbian owners are used to will be sorely disappointed...
Someday Apple will be forced to add full multi-tasking to the iPhone, at which point all Apple fanboys will be hailing this revolutionary step from the mighty Apple, as if no-one else has ever considered doing this before!!
@ Ruffinikoch
1) I download my daily podcasts on WLAN with Podcaster/RSS player or whatever application that avoids to do this with iTunes while at the same time,
You can't do this, because Apple won't let you...

I think you are confusing "scum" with people who have a different point of view from you...

Are you addressing to me? You may address me that way if you wish, however I will accept just 'Sir'.
Anyway, far better on the surface than with all you bottom-feeders.
What is "ultra-fiddly" about the Pre keyboard? I have grotesquely large thumbs (really, make a point of looking if ever at a conference with me or something) and can type with almost perfect accuracy.
Build is good, once I did the homebrew hack I am happy with app selection. Like it generally aside from some little things and:
1) No video. Really? Why?
2) Battery is indeed silly-bad.
Hoping for upgrades to fix both. Seen dramatic battery improvements with FW in other devices, so...
Agree with the initial comments of the iPhone. No backgrounding unless Apple says you can. The Latitude workaround is so lame I might not have launched if it I was in charge.

They're a bit jelly-like though aren't they? Can imagine it would get uncomfortable after a while.
I'd much rather have a physical QWERTY keypad than a software one, but in some ways the capacitive screen QWERTY are a lot more comfortable to type on - that isn't to say that you can type faster or more accurately however...
I am standing at a cross-road of intense significance...
For the last two years, i've been using the n95 8gb, which is, in my mind, the best device made by nokia...EVER. With its newest firmware, its web browser is a breeze to use - and the flash work great WITHOUT leaving my battery dead...
Now that I have to upgrade, i'm just totally perplexed. I mean, come on, nokia, I HAVE got the 5mpx camera, I HAVE got the qVGA display, I HAVE got the great sound, I HAVE got sufficient storage. What is new and exciting ? We are basically upgrading to s60 3rd ed FP2. Thats all we're getting from an upgrade...
The n86, is of course a natural choice, with the better display and amazing camera. At least it offers something better and kinda new. About its firmware, its following the exact same path as the n95 8gb, and its getting more mature by the day...
And I don't think the form factor is dated. Its useful, and still relatively new... I dont see anyone complaining about age-old candy bars? And its screen, although qVGA, works perfectly with that form factor ! ! I wouldnt want a bigger screen, the device proportions are perfect as they are !
buster wrote:I think you are confusing "scum" with people who have a different point of view from you...
People have different points of view on everything. You and I have been on both sides of a debate but I would not consider you scum, so the confusion thing has no merit. Also when it really comes down to it, neither your opinion, or mine or anyone else's really matters because what can you or anyone else here really effect? Nothing much. You like your Symbian devices? So do I, just not to the point where some here are so over the top myopic that they cannot see anything else. The same goes for the iPhone. Like it or not, the iPhone is here to stay and it will eat at Nokia's market share. It is just that simple. There are literally millions of people that just do not like Nokia phones, while the same is true of iPhones. So who cares. Luckily for me, I make enough money that I can have one, two or three of each and be happy with all of them. Initially Steve made what I considered an errant statement, he corrected and expanded, I acknowledged and moved on. Others here wanted to go off into the personal arena which does not bother me because there is no one on this site that has any influence on my salary, or how I spend it so for the most part I could not care less what anyone here thinks or says to me or about me. I like my iPhone and in many ways it is much better than anything Nokia has or may come up with, but on the other hand it has it's shortcomings that Nokia exceeds rather easily. So for me it is a win-win. If anyone does not like what I say or what I have said, I kindly invite them to Foxtrot Oscar Echo Alpha Delta.

I think the N86 is simply awesome. When I took back my N97, I had the choice for any phone I wanted and immediately jumped on the N86. It plus JoikuSpot, an AT&T pay as you go SIM card, and my iPhone were all I needed for a few days in NY. The camera is very nice and the coming upgrade will make the processing firmware better.

I was thinking about it a while ago, but at the time I was dead-set on a touch-screen, but what is the screen like? I hadn't seen the N86 in action, but I had seen the Samsung Tocco Ultra (AMOLED screen) and that looked amazing, and coupled with an 8MP camera the N86 looks pretty damn nice 😊.
