Sony Ericsson Satio review and launch blog

OK, I'm mainly jealous because AAS's review Sony Ericsson Satio has singularly failed to arrive, but I would like to present quick links to Rita el-Khoury's excellent series of opinion pieces on this new S60 5th Edition camera super-phone: 7 Things I Love, Unboxing Video & First Impressions, 7 Things I Hate, Software/Interface Video Walkthroughs and Hardware & Design. Good stuff. See also the new Satio blog, run by one of the device's official product managers.

Read on in the full article.

I know we're in the age now where phone technology has overtaken small battery tech, but i'm totally turned off by the Satio's battery life. Like the reviewer says, using the SAME battery as the N95 on a device with so many extra features and a touchscreen is just madness. People complain about Nokia not making the huge steps it made with the N95 anymore, but seeing some of the new phones being released and their limitations perhaps it's too soon for the 12mp super super smartphones?

Battery tech isn't moving as quickly as processors, camera and screen tech. We are now seeing 1Ghz processors in phones that has barely 1200mAh of power, which I find silly. People want them because 'modern' fancy looking UIs like Sense UI or whatever demands it, but the battery just won't cope. Ever try using one of those fancy Samsung widgets on their WinMob omnia? They are pitifully slow even with 500+ Mhz processors.

If sticking with an 'outdated' S60v3 fp2 device meant that I can get killer battery then so be it. I love walking in the countryside for 8 hours straight with the GPS turn on without having to worry about battery life - something I have done so many times before with a E75.

Quite right. Perhaps we will begin to see a backlash eventually, where phones are criticised more for how long they last rather than their technological limits.
This also puts me off from buying the latest cutting edge device. I was quite interested in this phone until i heard about the battery.

I'm not so sure the battery comments are fair - my Satio arrived yesterday and had a full charge overnight. Today its been in use all day - not heavily but I have made several calls, sent a few texts, taken several pictures and browsed the web. Bluetooth has been on all day

Not heavy use, I'd agree, but after 10 hours from the charger, the battery indicator is on full - not a bit of white showing.

The battery in mine is 1000mah - it could be better - for me the real test will come when I use it all day as a camera, will report back in a week or so's time

Modern processors consume less power and have more advanced power saving modes. Quick math test: what's more energy-efficient, a modern 1GHz processor that runs at 200MHz for 90% of the time (because of dynamic frequency scaling), or an antiquated 400MHz processor that runs at 400MHz all the time?

Isn't the bigger problem that in late 2009 SonyEriccsson are STILL using a propriety pop-port connector, rather than micro-USB and 3.5mm jack???

Some old processors like XScales already scale. So scaling isn't something new.

Have to say that my experience is different. Fully charged at 5pm last night, barely used it all and it was down to less than a 3rd this morning. Nothing was running at all.

make sure any applicaitons you are using are closed. openned applications make the processor and memory work harder.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU

Yes it was pulled but is now back in stores,it was only taken out until the new software was launch. The other thing to consider however,is that the cost of the MMS messages themselves will come down. I think this is very likely. If you look at Vodafone's latest GPRS prices for example, they have dropped big time.Modern processors consume less power and have more advanced power saving modes.People complain about Nokia not making the huge steps it made with the N95 anymore, but seeing some of the new phones being released and their limitations perhaps it's too soon for the 12mp super super smart phones.
