The expert's view: Symbian up against Android and the Hero

As ever, you'll recognise Tim Salmon's name: he's a regular round here and he's been through more smartphones than me. Which is saying something! He's now spent a month with the HTC Hero, running Android, and has relaunched his own personal blog with a detailed look at all areas of functionality, pointing out where each platform/OS scores. Worth a read!

Read on in the full article.

For a self-professed expert, I am surprised that he admits to having trouble keeping his Gmail account sync'ed with his Nokia device. I am far from an expert, but have none of the problems he describes using my Gmail account from a Symbian OS phone.

The more I read, the more I find myself hankering back to S40 and simple, fussless no-nonsense phones.

Have left my thoughts as a comment on the post 😊

Tee hee - maybe er, whatshecalled, didn't read the post very well either!

Seen your comments - thanks - very constructive - will take them forward to this week's Phones Show Chat.

Correction: Steve-professed.

Anyway, still no need for any seams with Symbian->Gmail.

Interesting Read.

Though I'm domewhat surprised about the comments regarding text input. Both the Wife and I have previously used a Nokia 5800 for several months and absolutely love the Hero for text input in comparison.

Even in portrait we find it pretty good. If entering things like URLs etc. then you do need to slow down and be precise, but most of the time I love it. Landscape makes it really fly.

Agree, it would be nice to be able to go back to a word and get a list of alternatives.

I now find it second nature to just select 'more or less' where I want to edit info in an area of text and then get it exactly right using the trackball. To be fair, without a stylus, it was a struggle to get it exactly right even on a resistive screen.

Wife used to have an iPhone she even prefers the text input to that (and the Hero overall) and she is definately not a techie.
