Whilst I await the return from CPW of my Nokia wonder-device and we all wait with baited breath for the descent from the mountain top of the Holy Prophet V20 with his powers to cure all known ills I idly trawled through ebay just to see - you know 😉 .
Anyway two to three weeks ago when I first pondered taking this amazing device over from my brother I quickly checked to see what he could get for it in US and UK on ebay. In UK two weeks ago prices were around 300-350 this is after it had already been dethroned from it's four week reign as a Flagship device (N900's imminent arrival) now they seem to be trading 220-270, only two weeks later!
The market has spoken, Steve and Rafe can say the damage to Nokia's reputation as a result of this half baked hardware/software/quality control combination is restricted to the Geek community but market prices reflect that it's far wider than that now.
The N97 as a product is sunk now.
That makes sense to me, and here's why....
THe N97 was launched in a super hyper blaze of glory here in Saudi. It hit the shops even before it did in the UK. EVERY phone shop you drive past has huge posters of it everywhere, billboards showing the N97 in all it's glory. So , you'd think it'd be everywhere, and loads of people would have one?
No. Wrong.
In the four months I'e had, I have literally only seen TWO people with the N97 here in Saudi. The N95 is still huge, the E90, the Blackberry, the iPhone etc. The N97 just has not caught on.
It seems those in the know, are waiting for the N900 and I suspect that will be a better seller here than the N97. Apparently, it is in the main Nokia flagship shops in Saudi.
Big big ( and expensive ) mistake I made with this catastrophe aka The N97. :frown:
The market has spoken. Even in the early days the N97 was not retaining it's value on eBay. It's true value (brand new, SIM free) is in the 300 region.
If mine wasn't paid for as a business expense, I would feel violated having spent 500 on one.
IMO the wait for the v20 firmware has been too long. They needed to drop everything and get the phone at least fast and stable, and also move quickly to fix the hardware problems. Even now, most Nokia care centres don't know if they are getting the 'new improved' lens cover in, you could be back in a months time to get the same work done again.
The N97 will have a short life as there are so many promising handsets coming in the next few months, even Nokia are upstaging it with the N900, but the slew of Android handsets, the Pre, BBS2 (not to mention the 4th gen iPhone), will all help to make it a one-year wonder.
In the annals of history, the N97 is going to resemble the N96 rather than the N95 - close, but no cigar.

Hey! Betamax was a superior system let down by poor marketing, the Titanic was a good ship badly sailed (two sister ships of the same design were fine).
You might have a point with the C5... 😃
