Review: Nokia 5630 XpressMusic

It's one of the smallest S60 smartphones ever and yet (GPS aside) it's full featured and highly stylised. In any case, given the XpressMusic tag, we fired the Nokia 5630 off to Ewan Spence to review. On the plus side, it's loud and testosterone-inspired (apparently) - on the downside, the screen's a little small and the absence of location features has got to hurt in late 2009...

As usual Nokia customises it as they see fit depending on the target market. Such a shame, as I do wish they provide the contact bar plug-in for the new E-series phones.

Come on Nokia, I want that contact bar on the E72!

/great review BTW as usual

This phone looks to Plastic an the Screen could have easily been made bigger as there is a big gap between the buttons an the screen,O.k it might attract the younger generation if the price is not made to high,an might be a Nice Xmas present, hope Nokia stop making to many plastic looking mobiles or there will sales will get worse an make people buy other mobiles instead

Seems like solid, no-nonsense kinda phone. I'm sure it will be perfect for quite a lot of people.

I'm liking the whole "buttons you can actually press" concept!

The big question I have though is battery life? The battery is fairly small in this phone.

How did you find the battery life Ewan?

the s60v5 sdk had non touch functionality too, it supported the numerical keypad, and it kinda worked exactly like this. is there a spec sheet of this phone anywhere? maybe that can confirm it.

I've used this device for 3 months : chose it before going on Summer vacations as a replacement phone (I didn't want to carry my BB nor my 5800 on the beach). I chose it because of the stunning features/weight ratio of this phone: it fits and makes itself forgotten in any pocket and, come on guys, even if the screen is small it's got WIFI & HSDPA and most of the S60 3rd 2nd edition features we like. I've got my corporate MS Exchange sync, Gmail and all my apps in just 80 grams.

What I do not like about it though :
full of bugs, like most of the latest smartphones and Nokia took 3 months to make the first upgrade available on OTA or PC Suite (eventhough I bought it as a sim-free phone) :
1- FM radio gets stuck while playing, only way out is to take the battery off; too bad for XM model
2- unlock security code bug (impossible to disable it except with a hard reset: this has been seen on other devices too)
3- Bluetooth buggy :
a) I lost many calls because of lack of audio with a Nokia BH-103 (which works great on 5800 or my BB)
b) Music Playing over Bluetooth is just not an option as the speed keeps varying while you're listnening, making the music sound out of tune ! again, not nice for a XM model
c) Bluetooth gets too easily out of range and disconnected
4- not very stable : Fring almost impossible to use as it shuts down every 10 or 20 seconds
5- event led indicator works for missed calls and SMS but not for email (detail for most users but I have this both on BB and XM 5800 and it's very convenient).

Hopefully some of those bugs will be corrected with the firmware upgrade but, honestly, having to wait 3 months for it is... frustrating to say the least.

That being said, if it were not for the bugs, I'd recommend the phone for it's versality, weight and thinness.

ah, I forgot one positive thing about the 5630: battery life is very decent at least with my use: the phone gets me through 2 days while it's connected to WIFI at home and work most of the time, EDGE outdoors and bluetooth all the time. Not bad, especially compared to XM 5800 !!! One could say it's because of the touch screen and screen size of the XM5800 but from my tests I found that the real differentiator is WIFI... drains the 5800's battery in no time. I look forward to getting my next E72 for that aspect...

I agree with markilou, a S60 3rd 2nd edition phone with that features/weight ratio and fits and makes itself forgotten in any pocket, can't be bad. A bit like the 6120c a few years ago.

I had been waiting for the E55, (again because of the features/weight ratio) but that does not seem to have shown up in the high Street yet. Although one retailer told me he could get me one from a London store for what i think is a high price; 299.

Since it looks like both phones may be in a few high Street shops before Christmas how about a head to head with the 5630 and the E55 for the folks who want a Symbian 60 phone that is light.

hi..

i would like to ask how do you put off the camera sound of 5630? thanks..
