What are the chances of returning my N97 to Vodafone and getting a different model? I got mine on launch day and have put up with it for long enough. I have been with Vodafone for 12 years and have Nokias throughout this period and I can honestly say that this really is the worst phone they have produced.
Dont get me wrong I love the phones physical design and if it functioned properly it really would be a fantastic phone. Why are Nokia scared of putting enough ram in a phone, 32GB storage is ample for almost everyone but a phone that runs out of ram in the first couple of weeks usage along with the other software and hardware problems is just a joke.
I have contacted Vodafone who offered no help what so ever, their basic view is tough until Nokia admit to major design defects and recall the phone it will be fixed with new firmware updates. Realistically how long some a consumer have to wait to have new software released to fix their phone.
Unless Nokia really do manage to make the N97 what it should have been, this certainly will be my last ever Nokia and from the response from Vodafone to a loyal customer spending between 30 and 90 a month my last Vodafone contract.
You're out of luck. I was a vodafone business customer with multiple handsets and 8 years of unbroken service and last year they cocked up my account and a handset order and my customer loyalty counted for nothing.
I ended up leaving VF (back with them now - that's another story), and I don't think you will have much of a case trying to reject the phone now. Best bet is probably trying to either live with it or sell it on eBay.
I think mine's going up for sale tonight on a local web site. Will lose a shed load of money on it, but don't want to lumbered with a second rate device.
I went to use my phone just now and its decided to do a restart, had to wait 5 minutes before I could make a call.
Surely Vodafone have sold me a device that is not fit for purpose, it cant even perform the simplest task of making a call.

I think they'll just get it fixed. Or in a best case scenario, replace it with another N97.
Bobbyball I am in exactly the same boat as you. Got my original N97 from Voda on launch day, I'm now on my 4th handset. I'm so fed up with this phone that I'm going to sell it. I'm not sure whether to sell it on Ebay or to Envirofone (which are offering something like 230). I'm concerned about fraud on ebay, check some completed listings and people bid them upto silly amounts like 5000.
Any thoughts or better ideas are appreciated?
I'm going to go back to my N95 8GB and wait for the Iphone to come out on Voda. I'd buy a factory unlocked 3gs 32gb but they seem pretty pricey.

Thats the problem, they can't fix it. I am running V12 firmware which fixed exactly none of the problems, from the reports of V20 it won't be any better. Like I have already said I would love to keep the phone IF it worked.
If a car manufacturer brought new car that kept turning its self off or loosing power Im sure it wouldnt be long before they were forced to recall and refund everyones money. Come on Nokia fix it or get our operators to offer us a refund and end of contact so we can choose a handset that works out of the box.

Good luck (you are going to need it).
In America, they call cars with persistent problems "lemons". I think they eventually bought in a lemons law.
A sociological study tested whether most lemons were built on a Friday, as had been first thought, but it turned out that most lemons were, in fact, built on a Thursday, when people were thinking ahead to the weekend and not paying attention. On Friday, the weekend was almost upon them, and so they were in an upbeat mood.
So, whats this got to do with the N97? Well, was the release date of the N97 a Thursday by any chance? 😊
I should say I have precious few problems with my phone, other than the hardware ones which have been mentioned. I'm considering a trip to Sandhurst to get my lens cover and GPS transmitter fixed, then I'll be totally happy.
Regards
Neil
I have been in talks with Vodafone customer care and have managed to get them to exchange my N97. Woohoo great.....for a Nokia 6306 😞 aparently this is a comparible phone to the Np7 with similar features.
Quite how Vodafone think they can get away with treating customers like this is beyond me. I have now taken up my dispute with Martley Catling -
Vodafone Director Complaint Team, email is as follows

and i seem to be getting a better response. Any other Vodafone customers who feel the need to vent off about the N97 feel free.
Either way Im getting the HTC HD2 in a few weeks, in my opinion HTC have overtaken Nokia in both build quality and technology.
Just had a long conversation with Vodafone care, The V20 software on early handsets will not be available for another few weeks, even when it does it as we know will not solve all the problems.
They have agreed to send me the HTC HD2 when it comes out next week and I can try it for a week to see if I like it. It took some hard work but I got there in the end.

Well done! At least this gives some hope to those who signed 18 or 24 month contracts for the N97. :icon14:

Hi to both Celios and Nottm,
Sorry to hear you both (like oh so many other AAS forum users) are unhappy with the N97.
I have only had mine 2 days, with FW v20, and it's fast and stable as a rock - never crashes - and as good as any other N-Series handset ever released.
Are you both on V20 FW? (and please NEVER restore a backup after flashing - instead re-install all your apps manually)
I do agree the RAM situation is little or no better now than it was 2 years ago...
I am not on V20 and the guy I was dealing with at Vodafone said it would be at least 2 more weeks for my handset to get it. He admitted that although better the new V20 has not greatly improved the overall performance as this is down to some hardware issues. Dont get me wrong I have had Nokia phones for 13 years and have also owned 2 Psion devices (the birth of symbian) but quite honestly I find it upsetting that Nokia feel that is is aceptable to realease a device in this state. Im not unreasonable but I have put up with it long enough. I love symbian and love the design of the N97 and Im not really looking forward to Windows Phone, hopefully HTC's TouchFlo3D will mask most of the faults.
