This is something that's happened in the last hour. My N97 is showing 3.5G in the top-left corner but I know fine well I'm not in an area with 3G/HSDPA coverage :con?
I've checked with ofcom's Sitefinder and with o2's own Coverage Map and they both confirm my conclusion. Also, if I understand correctly, 3.5G isn't meant to show unless data is being transmitted within a HSDPA covered area, otherwise it'd just show the 3G symbol. Am I wrong?
You tried it? How fast do your webpages load up?

I'm using it now to make this post (I had to change my connection priorities to make sure I'm not using my wifi) and sure enough the main N97 forum thread list loaded pretty quickly. 50kb, 100kb, 150kb, 200kb... loaded in no time at all! Certainly faster than I expected!
Maybe we do have 3G coverage here now, but I'm confused by it because I live in a rural area. It's just not expected, but I'd still like to check properly. A sure fire way would be to make a video call. Problem is, the only person to call who springs to mind is my brother but he has an iPhone now. He used to have an N95 which is why I thought of him first. Just one more limitation of the iPhone, eh? 😃
Is there a proper speedtest site for mobiles I could use to check my speeds? Also, are o2 still throttling back 3G speeds?
I wouldnt rely on O2's map, they said the centre of Norwich did not have 3G for about 6 months when it blatantly did as i was making video calls!
I've noticed no throttling of speed, seems as fast as it always has..
I found a mobile speedtest site... http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
On GSM it said my connection was 58Kbit/sec but on 3G it was 10x that (586Kbit/sec) so it seems it's not a fault with the phone, the connection is genuine 😃 Although, as far as I know, 3G should really be faster than this (up to 384Kb/sec - note: Kb not Kbit) and 3.5G even faster, I think maybe the signal isn't that strong here. Still sounds like good news though!
