To those who bought a P800 in March from Optus (or other?). Are there any problems with the phone? Does it have the latest firmware?

cheers

I picked up one this morning from Optus in North Sydney.

Phone: cxc 16 2002 rid
Bluetooth: cxc 12529 rc
Organiser: cxc 162001 r1f01
CDA: cda 162001/5 r1f04

Not that I know what all that means...

Nice phone though - very happy so far.

-Gary Morton

Got mine 3 days ago from Optus in Adelaide.
No problems, would like to help on the firmware but have no idea how to acess the info.
Still trying to get my head around it after owning a 7650.

Can you guys tell me what the plans are like that you are on?

The information I have been able to gleam is that it is a data plan of $99/mth (2y) with $55 of included calls at 20c/min + 18c flagfall 24x7. What else do you get? Were there other plans?

As I'm O/S the Optus launch caught me unawares (as it probably did everyone else). Am thinking of getting the upgrade over the phone and getting it brought out by a friend :scatter:.

Cheers

Thats the plan they are offering and it looks like it only goes till the end of March, you can take your pic, the P800 or the 3650.

Im on the $55 plan X 24 months. Works out to be $227 cheaper than the special $99 offer. Its not really a special. Not for me anyways. Call rate difference is 8 cents more ($55 plan). With the savings of $227, i got insurance for the phone for 24 months.

So you must have paid $829 for your phone on the $55 plan. On the $99 plan do you get anything for the other $44? (ie you get $55 calls so do you get $44 of data services or is that just to pay off the phone?).

Also, are there higher plans? $55 of calls is not much.

You can get any phone on any plan.

I put mine on a $150 a month plan. With $150 free calls.

I bought the phone outright for 600 bucks.

Dont let them trap you into going into that 99 plan. Its really a "55" plan and the extra $45 a month is paying off the phone.. Thats for 2 YEARS.

In my experience, its best to pay a bit extra an own the phone. Its a lot easier to weezel your way out of contracts if it shows that you owe nothing on the phone.. Trust me.

As appealing as that 0 dollar 99 plan is... I wouldnt touch it with a 10 ft pole mate.

You can get the P800 on a $99 plan (through optus) with $99 of calls a month at 24c peak 22c off peak for $317.
This works out to be cheaper than the extra $540 you pay with the $45 a month over 2 years.

For a month, I pay $55 for the plan + $34.5 ($829/24months -- didnt have to pay upfront 😃 ) + insurance ($8 i think). = $97.5
I got a special offer (an internal thing cos im friends with the dealer) $5 credit per month.
I dont see the point of the so called "$99 special". Kinda pointless unless u make heaps of phone calls.

well paying $540 upfront is better than paying $34.5 over 24 months = $829.
You just save $300 but who's counting? :P
i wouldn't use $99 in calls a month and thats why i'm not getting a $99 plan but i do know alot of people who would easily use $99 a month and for them this is MUCH better compared to yours or the optus deal.
*edit*
Your paying $55 + $34 a month which equals $89 a month so you may as well get the $99 a month plan as you get more calls and pay $540 upfront instead of $829

======================

][ $99 plan (not the special offer) ][

$99 X 24 months = $2376
$2376 + $699 upfront = $3075
$8 insurance X 24 = $192

total = $3075 + $192 = $3267
per month : = $3267 / 24 = $136

======================

][ $99 special offer with $0 upfront ][

$99 X 24 = $2376
$2376 + $0 upfront = $2376
$8 insurance X 24 = $192

total = $2376 + 192 = $2568
per month := $2568 / 24 = $107
======================

][ My $55 plan: ][

$55 X 24 = $1320
$1320 + $829 = $2149
$8 insurance X 24 = $192

total = $2149 + $192 = $2341
per month := $2341 / 24 = $97.5

Also get $5 bonus per month X 24 = $120

======================

So there is a difference of $38.5 & $9.5 per month. The call rate difference between the $55 & $99 plan is 8. I dont know where you got $540 upfront from unless they dropped the price as soon as i got the phone. Im worst off getting the $99 plan cos even at $540 upfront, I have to pay $99 + ($540 / 24) = $121.5 per month

Hope i havent confused anyone and myself.
Probably made mistakes somewhere, let me know

Cheers

I'm not so sure I agree with the others...

$55 plan = $829 upfront
$99 special plan = $1056 over 24 months ($44 x 24)
$99 plan = $699 upfront

Therefore, $99 plan is the cheapest at $699 but you'd want to be needing $99 worth of calls and data (ie if you only used $55/mth, you'd be paying an additional $829 on top of the $699).

On the other hand, assuming you make $99 worth of calls/data, the $99 special plan costs $357 more than the $99 plan but will only be more expensive by the 16th month ignoring inflation/interest (ie 699/44). I am assuming the Special has the same call rates as the $99 - correct me if I'm wrong.

Comparing with the $55 plan, assuming again you make $99 calls/data, it takes till the 19th month to break even, once again ignoring inflation/interest and forgeting that you get 20% fewer minutes (26.4c/m as opposed to 20.9c/m).

Now, Optus generally let you upgrade or lower the contract after the 20th month without penalty, forgoing the last 4 months. And since this phone is all about MMS, internet and email, I'd be guessing most of us will end up racking up considerable monthly costs. For instance, ignoring flagfalls, SMS, MMS, internet and email, the $55 plan only gives you 7 mins of calls per day, the $99 plans 16mins.

Conclusion:
* the $99 plan forces you to pay for at least $99 of services.
* the $99 special gives you the same rates as the $99 plan but you only have to use at least $55 worth.
* but it costs an extra $357 in two years time (assuming you make $99 calls/data) OR it saves you $699 now but gives you 44% fewer calls/data (assuming no excess charges)
So the Special will be between $700 cheaper and $350 more expensive than the $99 plan but it will be cheaper until at least the 16th month.

* the $55 plan means you only have to use $55 calls/data
* but it costs an additional $130 upfront compared with the $99 plan
* or it saves you $227 in 2 years time compared to the special
* and it gives you 20% fewer call minutes for your dollar
The Special can at most be $227 more expensive than the $55 plan but will be cheaper until at least the 19th month.

Therefore, $99 plan is the cheapest at $699 but you'd want to be needing $99 worth of calls and data (ie if you only used $55/mth, you'd be paying an additional $829 on top of the $699).

I dont understand what youre saying here. How can $99 with $699 upfront[ be cheaper than $55 with $829 upfront and how i have to pay $829 on top of the $699

the $99 special plan costs $357 more than the $99 plan but will only be more expensive by the 16th month

$99 (special) X 24 + $0 upfront = $2376
$99 X 24 + $699 = $3075

How is that $357 more?

====================================

The $99 plan with $699 upfrontis out of the question cos im not going to make that amount of calls.
Comparing the $55 and $99 special, you get $55 worth of calls for both but i save $227 on the $55 plan

I make about $50 calls per month so the $55 plan suites me fine. I will get 20% less call minutes compared to the $99 special but this wont really matter cos im still going to make about $50 of calls.

Its getting late and im shagged. There may be many mistakes in this post. Correct me where im wrong.

Well, if you were on the $99 plan but only made $55 calls per month then you would not be getting any benefit for the extra $44/month = $1056 (sorry, not $829, my mistake). This would then cost an extra $699 relative to the Special plan as you'd get no advantage for having paid it upfront. Its a hypothetical.

Also, on the $55 plan you are better off unless you start using more than $55 calls/data per month. There is a point at which it becomes more expensive than both the Special and the $99 plans. IE if you find you are using $99 calls/data per month then you would have been $130 (829-699) better off had you signed up to the $99 plan instead (and would be getting 20% more calls) OR ~$367 ((99x0.75-55)x24 - 829) better off on the Special (given that on the Special calls would cost 25% less). Its a gamble either way and depends on each users calling/data patterns.

But the point is, the Special plan is not as bad as people are making out.

PS, I'm not an Optus World employee thanks Zak248313, ha ha. That makes me laugh. Actually, I'm trying to upgrade my phone to the P800 but the Optus upgrade people haven't got the damn phone in yet!

I gotchya. When i saw that $99 special in the papers, i rushed to the optus shop and was let down by their $55 worth of calls. So i whipped out my old phone and started calculating which plan would be better in front of them. I may have pissed them off a bit.
Called up Sony Ericsson Service Centre the other day regarding firmware updates. They only received the phone about 2 days ago. Funny how optus got it 2-3 weeks before them??

I called up Optus coz i had MMS & GPRS config issues. The woman i talked to had some setup guides for the P800. Guess what else i found out she had?? Guides for SE's 3G fone Z1010 !!
Now, i wonder how long it'll take for that nice piece of equipment to turn up here or the rest of the world...
Guess what else i found out she had?? Guides for SE's 3G fone Z1010 !!
Are you sure abt that?? It's strange, the phone even hasnt been release anywhere in the world, how come she have those settings/guides.
:roll: :roll:

Dunno. We were chatting about the P800 and how its so new half the setup guides dont work etc, and she mentioned she had a newer one about some clamshell type SE fone wif model name starting wif Z-xxxx.
I assumed it was the 3G fone as i dont remember seeing any other SE clamshell Z-series fone on the net.
