Questions on WAP email access, mp4 fullscreen+ lock/unlock! — Sony Ericsson P800, P900 and P910

I got a p800 last week 😃 , and have been lurking on this list, and have a few questions, some simple, some not so. Any help would be great.

1) Given the startup (orange) logo is a FULLSCREEN .mp4 file - surely it must be possible to make fullscreen videos. I havent seen this mentioned on other threads, and would love more info about this. Maybe we could put a massive .mp4 video as the shutdown mp4, and watch it by shutting the phone down????? Must be worth an effort?

2) I got my phone on orange, and want to use the internet/email using free inclusive minutes with my talkplan 400. Presently i use the Orange WAP number (at 9.6k, which i am told by orange can be used as inclusive minutes). I am having problem acessing my pop.hermes.cam.ac.uk email service. Is this somehting inherent using the Orange WAP number? Do I have to use another ISP? If so, who? Orange are not any help on this.

3) Might be related, but is it possible to use opera on WAP, cant seem to get it to connect to anything (even when i have the logo at the bottom screen) - does it only work on GPRS???

4)I am using my phone in flip off mode - is there any way to lock the phone quckliy that you guys have found other than getting the virtual keypad up, hitting the menu button, and then keypad 1 - Is there any way to lock the phone without brining the virtual keypad up?

5) When my phone is locked, it seems to take an age (10 seconds) for the screen to come on to let me click OK, then * to unlock it - it vexes me, is there any way to unlock the phone faster??

6) When i shut my phone down, i have enormous difficulty turning it back on (I need to take the battery out and put it back in, hitting/holding the power button does nothing unless i do this) - what am i doing wrong????

Thanks for help on any of the stuff guys, i fear I am a horrendous newbie - but haven't seen this stuff answered elsewhere.

Hi Stu,

1) not sure!

2) As far as I know, you can only access Orange services over the inclusive minute Orange WAP number... so you could probably set up an email account on orange.net (http://www.orange.net) and try accessing that?

If that works, then you could redirect your Hermes mail to your Orange address by telnet/SSH-ing in, option 5, then option 1 then option 1 again to choose a redirect address.

3) I've used Opera on a normal data dialup connection (but not the Orange GPRS WAP number)

4) I use it with the flip so no idea!

5) & 6) when I did try my phone in no-flip mode I never had this problem (nor the power on problem - switches on immediately for me...)

Maybe you could take it back to the shop?

thanks very much alexes, thats a good idea with the redirect. Ill do that.

I'll have a word with orange about opera - i really would like to get that working - its much better.

I've installed filemanager now, and it really makes a big difference shutting down all the useless stuff.

Also, my phone seems to be powering on and off better now??? Though it still takes ages to start responding once i lock the phone. Annoying.

BTW I have done some more searching, and i think that at least one company are trying to get a useable fullscreen player http://www.videocoding.com/v2/demos/mdevices/index.html - should be interesting.....

Good to hear about filemanager - I've just started using something called "Switcher" (at my-symbian.com) which seems to work quite well too - shows you how much memory each program is using.

The redirect works really well - I redirect my Hermes mail to my orange.net address - I get a text alert when I receive one (with the subject line) and then can "Get&Send" the message if it's important 😊
