2 replies · 4,128 views · Started 31 October 2009

so i want v20 firmware now now now. so i tried to debrand my phone.

first with NSS. comes up with the message "read phone...error" when i try to read the values from my phone.

then i tried JAF and it comes up with some error about not being able to create winscard.dll. i tried both methods on two seperated computers and i get the same error messages.

is there another method i can use?!?!?!??!!??!

i remember i used NSS for my n95 8gb and it was a piece of cake. wtf!

I'm still very new at this, so don't shoot the messenger.

The winscard.dll error Running both the key and jaf as administrator may solve your problem, (i'm not sure, but i think you may be able to actually delete the file.

But a couple of pointers. in Nemesis did you follow this very simple guide?

http://nokia.nigelcoldwell.co.uk/firmware.htm

(don't forget to click on phone info before you WRITE the new code)

Or this
http://n97debranding.blogspot.com/

Also Lasikie has written a nice guide

Earlier in this thread http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...9&postcount=24

and this http://www.symbian-freak.com/forum/v...p?f=11&t=35935

Have to do a bit of searching for certain files

Or download them here http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VJ3V1AM8 (Please remove if I ain't allowed to post these.)

I'll try and put it as simple as I can.

1. First get the USB Cable Driver version: 7.1.20.0 (not 100% sure if you need these exact ones but they worked for me.)
2. Plug phone into pc and let windows install the drivers for your phone
3. Then get navifirm and download the required firmware too C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505 (you have to create that folder)
4. Next install JAF 1.98.62 (don't install the drivers that comes with this when asked)
5. Download JAF 1.98.64 and copy the ini files from this into your JAF 1.98.62 folder. (Whilst your here if your running Windows 7 make sure to set jaf.exe to run in compatibility vista sp2 mode)
6. Search and download PKEY V5 (V3 if running vista/windows7, and again change compatibility mode)(Some antivirus report this as a virus I chose to ignore and still have a clean system)
7. Run PKEY and click on go, press ok when it asks about box drivers. Jaf should then be loaded for you.
8. Select BB5 tab at the top.
9. Check Manual flash, Dead USB, Factory Set and Normal mode.
10. Uncheck CRT 308
11. Check Use ini and a box full of different phone models will pop up, find your phone highlight it and press ok.
12. You should then see your phone and firmware your going too in the drop down box.
13. Check Change also product code (Just in case )
14. Your now ready to flash, first unplug your phone from pc remove battery and press the power button down with no battery in to remove any left over power.
15. Put your battery in and press flash on JAF
16. Press OK and plug your phone into pc.
17. When Jaf says PRESS POWER ON NOW! do it (Usually happens instantly after pressing ok.
18. The new Firmware will then be installed, just leave it alone untill it beeps and says done twice on JAF
19. Enjoy

Lastly, here is how i did it.

successfully debranded and updated N97
Just a bit of info for new N97 owners like myself.
I took delivery of a brand new N97 yesterday and debranded and updated it.
I'm on Three Uk and decided to order via the internet to be safe as the DSR apply (Distance Selling Rugulations)

Having bricked an N86 the day before i was understandably nervous.

So here is what i did to be extra safe.

Uninstalled Nokia PC Suite, and then ran pc suite cleaner
available from Nokia

http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-...-suite-cleaner

Restarted computer.

Once restarted plugged in phone for it to get the N97 drivers.

Restarted computer.

Then downloaded and installed pc suite.

Restarted computer.

Installed Nemesis.

Restarted computer.

Plugged N97 in and changed product code . (chose a Euro one)

Restarted computer AND phone.

Plugged phone in and started pc suite.
Had to install pc suite support onto phone.

Restarted computer

Ran pc suite selected update phone, and all went okay.

didn't need a hard reset but did one anyway to clean everything up.

Left with a N97 debranded and running V2 software and with 60mb free on C drive.

I know it might seem a long winded way to do it, but having had pc's for years where you always had to restart in between updating programs, i decided to do it that way and be safe.

Actually, I would like to say that when I first fired up NSS after just closing down the Nokia Software, I got this error.

But this thread has caused me to make another attempt. This time I have been able to scan my phone without errors - I've not upgraded NSS since the last time. I'm guessing I hadn't given the Nokia Software enough time to release the USB interface before I fired up NSS, but I've not had cause to fire it up since, so today, no trouble scanning details.

I have not debranded my N97 yet, although I may if VF do their normal thing of blocking the VoIP code from the release. At least I'm happy that I could do it now.

So, all I'd say is make sure you have de-activated the Nokia software, wait longer than you want to so that it releases the USB port, and then fire up NSS and see if you can scan the phone.

After that, you should find that what you expect to happen does happen.
