For all those still using their N97s without bashing it against a wall, sold it on ebay or whatnot AND have upgraded to V20 - have you found anything new (other than the obvious Kinetic scrolling which kicks ass and should have been there from day one!!)..
For me:
1) Slider lock is nearly perfect (but still not there yet as sometimes its still a little slow to respond to)
2) The touch is so much better now.. no need to tap things twice for response
3) Web browser is so much faster now - loads up quicker and displays it much more snappier than before. They have also tweaked the interface is is a bit better now.
4) Memory - very little to no memory leakage (V12 will lose about 500kb every day or so until it gets to the mid 30MB's mark before I am needing a reboot). Apps are cleaner when unloading too and use less memory - less to no out of memory errors in Web browser
5) Some apps have translucent "Soft buttons" now (see through) like the camera - so you dont get an ugly side bar with only two buttons in landscape mode
6) Love the VOIP client - if a bit cheap and hard to find.. hehe
Definitely a new lease of life for this phone (as much as the V20 jump on its older sibling, the N95-1).
Wishlist for the next upgrade:
1) Safe mode when booting up - bare minimal loads (to get around the stupid white screens of death would be nice)
2) Camera face detection from N86
3) Proper Portrait and landscape onscreen QWERTY like the one floating around (chinese app but hacked by Mr Milk guy..)
4) Nokia Multiscanner (but can be a separate download I guess)
5) Voice input - create your own commands (rather than only from the selected list) and can use it to input text
6) Speech synthesiser - read from any source other than just for your SMS's
more, importantly how long 'til it arrives!

Is there a guide available on how to use this feature??
-Will 😊
EDIT - As in where is the blasted thing?!

Don't, just don't, even start talking about the next upgrade. It's a very sore point that I feel proper shafted over thanks those lovely people at Nokia. My N97 is lying in darkened drawer after the fiasco of the disappearing v20, and will not be used again until I get v20.
But that time you guys will be either onto v30 or the N99.....
:frown:
Some comments...
The kinetic scrolling in v20 is *NOT* everywhere. It seems to be limited to LISTS.
Examples:
* it will scroll a list of email accounts and lists of messages within an email account, but it won't kinetic scroll the message itself
* it will scroll the list of help items, but it won't kinetic scroll the actual help text
The kinetic scrolling doesn't extend to all applications either, especially the S60 3rd edition ones.
Improved Memory Function - this pretty much means that when you're in an application, your home screen widgets now shut down and have to reload when you return to the home screen. That is, the "multi-tasking" aspect of the OS is now lessened.
I still have encountered problems in the browser and it seems to not function as well as the v12 version did. I'll collect more data and report back later.
my wishes:
- a gallery that I can tell WHERE to look for images. I don't need album art and application images in the gallery
- a player that I can tell WHERE to look for music. Noone needs ring tones and application sounds in the player.
- sending of more/ all contacts over bluetooth (to 'sync' with my car hands free)
- multiple homescreens
so you don't have to go changing product codes to get the language support you require.
This would allow you to remove all but English if desired .. which has to save some space somewhere.
so it goes something like this .. NSU - which languages do you want to load initially? English x .. Finnish x .. Japanese x .. Chinese x ..
After loading the OS .. you have in Settings .. Phone .. options or someplace .. Add/Remove Language Module ..
- It can't be that hard! 😉
To reorder your favourite contacts. Had to remove the ones on the front screen and re-add them!
Multiple homescreens
I'll probably think of more.
I would like the ability to set my chosen camera settings as the default. So they are there when I open the camera. I would also like to be able to choose the default web browser so it can be something other than the crappy native one.
I'm hoping the next firmware is Symbian^2.
And I want it by Christmas '09.
multiple desktops
reworked email client that can check OWA or mfe that fully supports Nsereis devices
multiple desktops
extra widgets
- shortcuts x 4
- email x 2 at least
multiple desktops
free applications
- RoadSync (samsung has it why not nokia) - resorted to this since MFE and my co. exchange don't play nice
- PDF reader
- Quickoffice Edit (the rest don't cut it as they dont support docx pptx xlsx)
oh, did i mention multiple desktops?
probably not enough ram to ever support it, ha!
and...PC SUITE again, not ovi suite. hate it, hate it hate it!
I would like to see the ability to switch connections from service provider to WLAN whilst you are browsing the internet on the default browser. You could do this on the N95 but not the N97. Really irks me coz I always switch over to WLAN when I'm downloading stuff to save on my data plan.
Also, would like to be able to change the bookmark icons in the shortcuts on the home screen. You can't tell which is which coz the all have the same web icon.
I would love more widgets too....lol
cheers
Denimgirl 😊
P.S. jerm....I too hate, hate, hate Ovi...definately prefer PC Suite.
+1 More Wodgets pls and an additional page for them on homescreen and more of Callendar and App shortcuts and make them actually WORK
And a seperate folder for them on OVI they really are a pain to find (in fact OVI is a pain to navigate even on a PC why not display more Apps per page and have them better filed and it crawls)

.
You know you can set it up so it'll always use WLAN in preference to 3G when its available?

True, but in my experience it doesn't do it too well
I've noticed something new... I think. When I've switched to a profile with a name too long for the little box on the homescreen (in my case, it was called "Completely Silent"😉, it scrolls across a couple of times.
V10-12 peeps: Have you got this?
Small and pointless, I know, but for some reason it suprised me.
Yes, I have set it up but wanted the option to change it on the fly. Surf web using my carrier and then switch over to WLAN when I want to download a file (WLAN uses up the battery faster).
Don't know if it is a fix, but my embedded flash videos now seam to work on my phpbb forum 😊
The only thing I truely want is proxy authentication, surely this isn't to demanding is it?
I would love to have the media server functions I had on my N95 and N96. Why oh why did they have to get rid of this feature for N97??
A bloody fix for the phone defaulting to Nokia Ringtone!
Olly wrote:A bloody fix for the phone defaulting to Nokia Ringtone!
hahaha... I agree.... I want my Video ringtones without it changing back to the Nokia tune on every second ring.
Top on my wish list is to be able to unlock the phone with the slider and then have a touch screen that works straight away rather than having to wait about 2 minutes.
Not a biggie, but just something that might improve my user experience a tiny bit......
Makes me laugh, it really does 😃
When I want to be sure of WLAN , I use the following workaround :
Select in Profile ( while webbrowsing ) > Offline
Continue browsing and select > WLAN - works when Web is set to : "Always Ask" .
Change profile back to > e.g. General .
I am using SmartConnect also , but that is not reliable either , when it comes to favorite setting WLAN : it selects probably the "best" connection .....
