The non-invasive DIY way to fix N97 LED flash flare

I'd been seeing comments about improving N97 camera flash flare (refracted through camera glass scratches) by using a marker pen, but hadn't quite got my head around exactly what to do. Luckily, I came across this helpful video on YouTube (embedded below) - the marker pen has to be applied to the sidewall between the flash silo and the start of the camera glass. See especially the photo at the end of the video.

That was my first attempt. My second attempt was using a small strip of black postfix paper, whhich worked even better. The third attempt will be acryllic paint 😉

The fourth will be called a new phone 😉

I use dry wipe/whiteboard marker after i couldnt cut and align a thin sliver of electrical tape. It can be easily removed. If using permanent marker, a whiteboard pen can be used to draw over the permanent marker on non porous surfaces. When the drywipe ink is wiped away it should take the permanent ink with it. Give it a try on plastic, glass or metal.

How can you tell the difference between standard and Nokia re-designed lens? I have noticed flash flare in full dark photos, do I have the first model, and where can I get the new one if so?

I was thinking of buying a N97 but all these issues really freak me out. I can get one online for 400, black or white EU version no brand. Do you think that by purchasing this model now I'll get the redesigned version (if they even exist) ?

The redesign is just to raise the camera glass protective shutter, so that scratching doesn't occur - it's the scratches themselves that ultimately cause the problem.

Thanks for the reply. So Nokia isn't producing a fixed version of n97 and if you want yours to get fixed you have to go through nokia assistance.
I was hoping that buying one now would save me from camera lens and gps problem but If I'm not wrong, all n97 from the first model to the last released are the same.

Yes, they are producing fixed versions. The new shutter design went into production ages ago and should certainly be in new units coming out now.

Or just don't fire the flash...

People need to learn that it is pointless attempting to take pictures in the dark and that flash will magically illuminate the entire scene. Silly.
