vLingo (Wow!)

Since I now have EVERYTHING re-installed and configured with v20 (running fast and stabile!), I got a chance to play with the new application....vLingo.

It uses speach recognition to allow voice command and voice data entry into your N97.

I demonstrated it to an iPhone owner by creating and sending a text message to his iPhone....almost!

It created the message very quickly and it looked up his phone number in my contact list, but it picked his home number instead of his cell phone number.

THUS I DISCOVERED that there is a necessary Contact feature that you need to configure before you can get the full benefit of this program.

The feature is Contact DEFAULTs.

While in Contacts, OPEN a Contact (but don't select the edit tab), instead selection OPTIONS->DEFAULTS. This will allow you to select the default entry to use for Voice Calls, Messages, Email, Video Calls or Web Address.

Set the DEFAULT for Messages to their mobile/cell address and now when you use vLingo it will pick the proper number to send to!

Enjoy!

ps. This application works a LOT better than the voice dial feature built into the N97. BUT...requires an Internet connection to function!

Okay....did a bit more testing and maybe it's not perfect...

Here's how it parsed when I said

"Round and round the rugged rock the ragged rascal ran"...

vLingo rendered as:

"round and round rugged rock the wagon rascal ran".
- 1st try
"round and owned the ragged rock the rugged jackal ran" - 2nd try

You could make a party game out seeing all the different ways this phrase is rendered!!

I didn't use the theatrical Scottish "rolling-r"s in there and tried to enunciate as good as I could, but it has some usability in getting most of what you say correctly.

You do have the ability to edit afterward before saving/sending.

Further problems...

When sending a text message it adds a "1" in front of the phone number which makes my carrier send me back an error message.

When doing voice dialing however it doesn't add the "1" and the call goes through right away.

I've been to their website and don't see this reported in the support FAQs.

Can anyone else replicate this error?

I don't see any configuration setting that would cause it to add this "1".

And I was just about ready to pay for the Premium version!
