Will Nokia replace the lens cover or the lens itself???

7 replies · 3,898 views · Started 06 November 2009

I finally sent my N97 for repair (to Alabama, USA). In the repair form I stated "Camera lens cover scratches the lens and the flash itself, leaving marks and scratches that distort and ruin photographs". I already have a nice nasty scratch on my camera lens and I sure hope Nokia will replace not only the cover, the lens as well! Or will send me back a new lens cover and my old scratched lens/camera? The scratch is obvious, but I didn't specifically say "Please replace the lens" or "Please replace the whole camera".

What do you think? I am paranoid because so far their support was awful (not admitting those issues, firmware delays), so I do have reasons to be this worried. Should I maybe call them and clarify that? I already sent the phone...

MonarchX,

As I told you before, the Hunstville, Alabama authorized-Nokiacare facility changed out the backplane assembly which has the lens and sliding cover integrated together with the GPS antenna, etc. on my N97 when I sent it to them.

Yes, thanks for the info, but its possible that you specified you already have scratches and want the lens replaced as well. I just wasn't sure and I know better than to take chances with Nokia.

Also, the warranty verification by product code or IMEI or any other code I tried fails every time. I even bought the extended warranty and yet their website can't verify my info... I included my extended warranty booklet in the package and stated that the phone was bought from NokiaUSA.com around July 2009 - hopefully they will be able to verify those records!

The lens cover and plastic that sits over the lens (the thing that is getting scratched by the cover) is all one module. So they will replace the whole thing at once and you'll get a nice scratch free lens and a new cover!

They are sending a whole new phone... and I specifically told them in the included print out that I wanted my back cover and touch screen because I installed a special protective cover.... Damn...another $30 Nokia cost...FFS...

They probably sent you a new phone only because of the GPS parts shortage. They want to keep their turnaround stats low so that was the easiest way for them.

Try writing them a letter or email and see if they can ship you the back-cover back or at least give you a credit.

In future, be sure the smartphone is working well before you start "tricking-it-out" with customization (hardware and software) because you might end up with a new handset.

I will have to call the fulfillment center because that is where you get to talk to a real person and complain.

I also think there is a good chance the new phone will have all the same issues. Nowhere does it say that the new phone isn't from an old batch...

Well, I got the new phone and OMFG its so much better. I swear I had some kind of a pre-early-pre-prototype crap. I can finally enjoy my phone....3 months after buying it.
