N97 585162 Unbranded - Can' Update via PC Suite or Ovi

Hi,

Hope someone can help before I throw this piece of tin/plastic against a wall!

I don't understand what I am doing wrong. I am trying to update the phone with the latest update V2.0.

I have downloaded the latest software for PC Suite / Ovi and installed them and when I select "check for updates" each of them gives me a "Can't Update" error due to bad internet connect / firewall etc.

I have always used PC Suite for getting the updates until V1.2 where it kept saying there were no updates. Tried it via the phone and this could pick up the update but PC suite couldn't?!?

On one of the posts a person suggested using Ovi - so I tried this and kept getting a error "Couldn't connect to the Server for update". Right so tried to see if it was maybe my internet connection - broadband / wifi.

Go to Tools -> Connect to Internet and all it offers are connections to the Internet via my phone / Mobile Operator?!? Why can't it use the Broadband connection which is way faster? According to the help I should be able to select another connection but the software Ovi wont allow it. Option is disabled.

What the hell is the problem - doesn't it like a Wifi connection?

So any suggestions on what I should try next?

Thanks in advance,

A.

As most everyone else is able to upgrade via PC Suite / OVI, then unfortunately, the problem lies with your PC or Broadband connection.

Helpful hints:-

Download & Install latest NSU (not PC Suite, Not OVI Suite).
then, Before loading NSU...

Disable Windows Firewall
Disable 3rd Party Firewall (e.g. Norton Internet Security)
Disable Anti Virus (e.g. Norton Virus Checker)

If this doesn't work, see if you can persuade a friend to allow you to install NSU on their PC and try upgrading again.

Hope this information is useful.

Thanks for answering so quickly Dez ;o).

Did what you suggested get the same error.

These are the files is lists when talking about allowing through the firewall.

The firewall was never on:

nsl_host_process.exe
nsu_ui_client.exe

This is the version of NSU v1.8.10en

I never have a problem with downloading or installing things - can't understand why there is an issue with this software.

The funny thing is I just used the phone to do the bare essentials nothing way out like install additional software on it.

I just don't get it ;o(

Happy ending - tried the last of your suggestions and finally got the update downloaded.

Maybe you can shed light on why this worked based on this:

I used my work laptop to download the previous updates. And when I tried to down load the v1.2 I was at home using my broadband connection. The work laptop works through a proxy (VPN), home connection is direct.

When I tried to download the update via the VPN / Proxy it went through no problems.

I have a funny suspicion that the proxy setting is held somewhere on the laptop so that any updates done are always worked through the previous update path - if you know what I mean?

Anyway just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to answer my post ;o)

Perhaps your broadband router firewall is causing the issue?

One other thing you could try - if you can't get access to someone elses' PC - is to create an XP VM using a trial of VMware Workstation.
It's a lot of work to setup, but I run Windows 7 on my laptop and I don't trust NSU on W7 yet, so I use an XP VM for firmware flashing - and it definitly works!
