Return of an old friend - The N95 :-)

Got the N95 back up and running and it actually feels pretty good!

I've had enough with the N97, its almost unusable since version 2 because the keypad won't work for about 2 minutes after I unlock the phone.

I can't work out if it's hardware or software because on version 12 it sometimes played up, but it's got a lot worse since I updated - so, it's either a hardware problem that has coincidently got worse at the same time as I updated the firmware, or it's just a software problem.

Anyhow, I've done 2 hard resets and it's not fixed it so the phone is going back to a service centre. While it's there I may as well get the lens changed and have a new GPS antenna put in.

Has anyone used the service centre in Kingston Upon Thames? Will they be able to fix the phone on site or will it have to go back to Nokia?

To be honest, now that the novelty has worn off, I won't be surprised if I don't miss the N97, the N95 is such a good device..... 😃

Thats is not a firmware problem. Did you try the hard reset Vulcan death-grip ?

I did the same about three weeks - shoved the N97 away back in its box, and got out the N95, and I'm of the same opinion as you - I don't miss the N97 at all. In fact I did a hard re-set the other day, and looked at the phone, and just could not be bothered with it - and packed it away.

The only possible advantage the N97 offers, was posting replies on message boards such as this, which was easier to do on the N97, but that accounts for such amount of what I used the phone for - I just feel much more confident with the N95 as I know it's not going to let me down.

I'm with you there. The N95 is the best phone I've ever had, followed closely by my old trusty N73, which I dropped down a drain and was submerged for 15 minutes and still worked after I managed to get it out of the drain with a golf club. The N97 v20 firmware update doesn't seem to have improved it's performance to any great degree and although some bugs have gone I've got a whole load of different ones now.

Yeah, I'm still on v12 with the N97 and was desperate to get hold of v20, but it's still not availble for this part of the world - regardless of product codes.

From what I've read on this and Nokia Discussion Board, the v20 seems to have delivered a bit of a mixed bag - somefolk very happy now, with some others encountering new problems.

One minor criticism of the N95 ( bear in mind it is 2.5 yrs old! ) is the battery life, esp if I'm on the internet, it really seems to drain the battery VERY quickly.

I was at that time, pretty desperate to get hold of v20, as the N97 was just pain in the derriere to be honest, it became a liability rather than a asset. To cut a long story short, us here in the Middle East still do not have access to v20, but I have read really mixed reviews.

Some people have got v20 and now think the phone is brilliant, whereas others, seems to have more problem snow than before!

In terms of the N95, perhaps the only very minor criticism ( bearing in mind its 2.5 year old! ) is that the battery just cannot sustain a prolonged period of web browsing, but I dont think this is the batterys fault, most phones are like this.

problem snow?? I think your space took a jump to the left...

I had my n97 out last time I went to a Don't Care(tm) point and it's still awesome, works perfectly almost all the time. But looks like crap cos most of the paint has come off the keys... *sigh*

Yeah, didnt you realise the N97 came with problem snow?

Can be a bit of hazard if youre not careful, as youll go ar seover t it.

i done the same a little while ago

still had the n96 in the draw so put the n97 back in its box and started using that again

it was a joy to use after the sham of the n97

like you i found its reliable unlike the n97 , gps works , signal is good , camera wont scratch , its just nice to have a phone that you pull out of your pocket and it works 😊

i bought the n86 but that seems to have the same problems as the n97 with the gps so sent that back and went back to the n96 again

lol

just cant get away from the n96 mines running v30 and a 1200mah battery so its stable and has decent battery life with large memory and it works so all in all 100x better then the n97

what has happend to nokias latest phones

the n86 and the n97 have poor gps and the same gps design (sticker near the camera etc)

iam hoping that they start getting things right as when my n96 is worn out i dont want to buy a nokia phone with a dud gps system again or a dodgy camera cover

all this experience has done is made me realise that the n95 and the n96 are both top devices still

After 4 handsets I finally had it with my N97 and sold it to Envirofone for 232.

Currently I'm back with my N95 8gb and love it! While I liked the form factor, touch screen and keyboard of the N97, since using the N95 again I haven't even missed them.

I'm going to wait until the Iphone comes out on Voda and buy one of those. I'll think very carefully before buying another nokia device.

am i the only one who remembers how bad the n95 was when it came out?

it made the n97 look like a slick finished product

I really liked my n95, but couldn't go back to it.

Since my replacement n97 came its been a dream, and running incredibly well with v20, no probs at all

very happy 😃

No - I thought this was just the same as hard reset but for when you can't get the phone booted?

But, I don't think I'm going to try - I shouldn't have to - going to let Nokia sort it out as I'm bored of the thing now.

spirit44, I really hope mine is like this when I get it back 😊

Question: If they change my screen becuase of the problems I've been having, will it mean the scrathes will be gone? Or, will they only change the gubbins underneith the bit you actually touch?

I got my N95 in around July 2007, so it had been out for a few months by then, and it was locked to Orange, and to be fair, it was working ok by then, still had nowhere near the poor performance I've experienced with the N97.

When I came out to Saudi, I had the phone unlocked, debranded and then got access to all the newest FW upgrades and currently with the latest, v31. Was amazed when I realised that the phone will read a 16gb memory card, whereas the N95 8GB doesn't even have a card slot.

Anyway, out of curiosity, was wondered - how many FW updates will the N97 need to become a good solid, reliable perfomer ( globally ) ?

I don't know in all honesty, how proportionate the complaints are against the N97. There are some happy owners now, but also seemingly, still quite a lot of unhappy one.

Wouldn't have worked mate... your photo shows the Vulcan Mind Meld. 😃

yeah but cmon did the n95 have such serious issues

camera cover scratching / gps that doesnt work because of interference / rubbish signal / charger adapters that melt when used /

yeah the n95 had beta firmware and rubbish battery life and ram but they were no where near as serious as the n97s hardware show stoppers

the n97 at the present time is the biggest phone flop/letdown the world has seen in my eyes

nokia promised it would deliver so much , it fell flat on its face out of the box , 5 months later it is still laying there drowning in its own dribble , shame nokia didnt test it enough really it could have been great but all its done is left a foul taste in my mouth and pushed me back to my year old phone

great stuff

Sound familiar?

They're all threads about the Nokia N95 and N96

I don't think it's in question, when the N95 first came out, it took a few upgrades to get to a decent level.

But, what is interesting to note, is that there seems to be quite a few N97 users who have had to ditch the phone - some with v12, some with v20 upgrades - and revert back to an older and 'inferior' model.

Its just that there appears to be a good level of inconsistency with N97 and the v20 upgrades, it has worked for some, whereas for others it hasn't.

Yeah its funny how lots of people hated the N95 and nothing but complaints and now we are seeing the same again with the n97. Next people will putting their N900 s back in the box and saying how there n97s are so brilliant. Had both the n95 and n97 with no problems whatsoever.

jApi NL wrote:Did you ever try the E90 ?

😊 Regards jApi NL

If there was a slimmer version of it today,I'd deffo have one,I think its a solid device. Perhaps with a few improvements: 5mp camera, mass memory,3.5mm jack

Love the keyboard though,SIX rows of keys! The best business phone? I reckon i could sell the N97 and pick up a decent used E90,but i'd be losing a shed load on the N97

My wife went to take the phone in for repair today as was in there for 45 minutes, before having to leave, with the N97 becuase her lunch break was coming to an end.

She doesn't really know what the problem was, something to do with I.T. and the fact that when they entered the phone into their system is came up as being a carhpone warehsoue phone, and not from Expansys which is where I bought it from.

Can't get any more sense out of her than that!

So, no nearer having a fixed phone. :icon13:

never ever heard of any n95s getting scratched lens from the camera cover , ever

maybe the n96 and the n95-2 as they dont have a camera cover

the n95 gps was due to it not having a agps enabled untill v12/v20 i believe it was and also to the gps being under the keypad which is very different to the n97 gps recieveing interferance from the main board of the phone dont you think

never heard of a n95 having a poor signal at all has anyone else , maybe the cases you pointed to were very rare examples

i dont think you can compare the n95-1s software problems to the n97s hardware problems there is a big difference there mate

most n95-1s suffered a loose slider , this is the only hardware fault that the n95s had , they had many software glitches on v10 v11 v12

the n97 comes out of the box with faulty gps , a dodgy half thought of camera design , a slide design that has two supporting hinges one side and one the other side , useless battery cover design , really poor signal ,

to me this is much more serious then the n95s loose slider and beta firmware

the future n97s may be veruy good indeed , once they start shipping them without major faults that is

we will have to agree to disagee mate to me the n97 is a flop so much so i took 170 pounds loss and sold it after 4-5 months with it and the troubles it bought me

the phone is so unrealible it is unreal , reboots here , crashes there and a camera you dont want to open and a gps that cant direct you cmon its a joke

v20 made it a tiny bit more stable but this is how long after release

iam sorry but my 6220c out performs the n97 in terms of speed , reliabillity , features that work as they should , stable useable firmware and it would actaully be more fun to use then the n97

iam fed up with buying devices and them not working properley

my new gadget purchase should be filled with excitment and pleasure not torment and frustration oh and about 7 hours on the phone and 500 emails back and forth to nokia

i guess your idear of owning a high end smartphone and mine differ

when they fix the n97 it will be good but at the moment id rather use a black and white screen phone that actually works when asked to

iam glad some of you are happy with it but if nokia churn out any more monsters like this then me and nokia are done

iam thinking of the e72 next to maybe put some faith back in nokia

untill then ill be gratefull i kept my n96 and that it isnt as unrealiable as the n97 😊

after what ive been through with the phone ive told everyone on facebook and forums just to stay away and buy the omnia hd instead

its about 8 months old now and still beats the n97 and probably even the n900 in terms of hardware

have a good day mate take care

Hey... don't kill the messenger!

They were posts that were about after the N95 and N95 8GB launches.

I still have my N95 8GB, I sold the N95 (curses), and swear by it. No lens scratches, great GPS, nice camera, does what it says on the box. It's now 2.5 years old but a blooming good phone.

However, I wouldn't have said that prior to it's big firmware update, funnily enough I think that was v20, as it was "buggy" prior to that.

I certainly won't be getting rid of it in a hurry that's for sure.
