Phones Show 94

Just a note that The Phones Show 94, programme 94 is now out, featuring extended news, a user testimony (N86), my review of the Nokia E91 N98 N97 mini and a top 10 Android application run down. On a technical note, the MP4 codec used in making the QVGA version for those subscribed to the show (via RSS) on their smartphones has been downgraded to 'MPEG-4 basic', meaning that it should play smoothly on absolutely every phone in existence 8-) Comments welcome if you still have a playback issue!

Read on in the full article.

What device are you trying to play it on, and can you confirm you're using the QVGA (40MB-ish) version? I've tested the file on several devices of various vintages....

Two things I took from that video:
1-That piece of junk doesn't even have a proximity sensor.
2-Steve almost broke a finger stabbing the screen to make it scroll.

Three things I took from your comment:

1) You're wrong. The N97 mini has a proximity sensor and it works really well
2) You're wrong (again). The touchscreen works very well.
3) Rafe REALLY needs to do something about Unregistered trolls on this site....

I definitely agree with Steve about trolls.

And I also have the problem that I still cannot play the Phones Show on my E90 ("Unable to play media clip" error in Real Player)...

you did say, on a recent show, that the n97 mini corrects "what is wrong on the n97"

last time i saw, the mini does not have 256mb of RAM...so i call that BS

"last time i saw, the mini does not have 256mb of RAM"

Where did anyone say that it did? With PR 2.0 software, I have yet to be convinced that low RAM is a serious problem. All people quoting problems have been using Gravity - which is currently under major revision for reducing its memory footprint.

Steve,
Podcasting reports the file size as 48408351 bytes, so I'm assuming I've got the right file...!?

As discussed by PM after Show 93 (under my real name Ian Ch.) I haven't changed the URL used by Podcasting, but the show no longer plays, and hasn't done for a while...

steve, i'm just watching it on my computer, not a device.

Hi steve,
Its not working for me on a 5800 downloaded through the podcast app in music section.
Its around 40MB so assume its the QVGA version.

This problem started happening with show 92.
93 played ok, but was jerky.
94 doesn't even start.

Thanks

Phil

I also had trouble on my N900, and on Ubuntu too, using FF - the latter claims the file is 253KB.

When I tried wget from the command line, it downloaded the whole thing and that seems to play fine. I then tried FF again, and it worked that time.

Trying my N900 again, and it quits at 281309bytes (ls -l on command line).

It seems something is unreliable somewhere...

Yes, right file. But if others are reporting it plays on everything from a humble N73 or E61 upwards, I can't see ANY reason why something much newer with more horsepower should fail. So got to be a software/player conflict of some kind. More data points needed and I'll continue to try/experiment this end. In the meantime, just watch via Web or the YouTube client!!!

I already did... :con?

It does seem weird that my E90 and other people's N900s/5800s can't play it though....

I can download/play the PS QVGA versions via RSS on my E90 without issues . Firmware version 300.xxx

😊 Regards jApi NL

Right. As I mentioned in my post above, I think it is not about the players at all, but something to do with AAS's web site, caching, or something other network error.

If I manage to download the file completely, I can play it on almost anything. The problem is that some attempts fail, but fail in a way that leave a partial file behind that doesn't play at all, or doesn't play completely.

...but that's just a guess.

Update: I downloaded this with my 5800 via the link (rather than use the podcasting app) and it plays fine.

Guess there must be a problem with that, although others such as geekbrief are still working fine?
