I want to start this post by saying that i understand this is a phone first and a camera second, but if it has a flash then surely it should work!
I have a two week old n97. As far as i can tell, i have the newer non-scratching lens cover. There doesn't seem to be one side lower than the other, and mine has a clearance of about 1mm.
I seem to have 1 very definate scratch, that is not over the lens. it passes through the white circle and runs parallel to the flash part on the right. I'm sure this was there when i got the phone, and it does seem as if it is there by design.
So looking at the photo i posted, can anyone suggest what might have caused the washed out image?
I must say coming from the N97 i do find the picture quality in low light to be almost un-useable.
I have seen the "sharpie" pen trick on YouTube, and am wondering whether to do this to mine. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTvgV6uWkyA )
Also, i notice that the preview in the screen look horribly grainy.
Can you guys post your thoughts and any fixes you may have applied.

i tried to emulate the low light photography you're having problems with, but still didn't get the grainy picture you have.
the photo attached was taken in low light/curtains closed/no artificial light/no flash but still seems pretty clear.
however, the other day i was taking photos indoors and found that they were on the grainy side, but then discovered that the lens was a little dirty so i gently cleaned it ...... i doubt this is your problem but it maybe worth a look - i am sorry though that you have noticed a scratch around your lens - it looks like you may have to get it checked out - perhaps before you try the sharpie idea :frown:

Well, you picture does seem a lot clearer than mine. i have read elsewhere that smudges on the lens can be responsible for this, so i will have another practice tonight.
i just took a marker to mine today and it fixed the flash flooding a treat, i could have gone to nokia but i cant see it being worth the hassle when it works perfect now, and the scrath between the lens and flash is harmless, i dont see the need to be changing it atall
Can i just ask you to describe your scratch. i've tried to take a picture of mine, but haven't got a clear enough one yet.
My lens is NOT getting scratched as such, it just has what LOOKS like a scratch, but it almost looks like it's supposed to be there!
Had a much better look at the glass covering my lens, and yes it is now scratched.
I have had the phone about 2 1/2 weeks, so it is just outside of the DSR's.
I also had hoped that getting one of these so late on would mean i would get a scratching one.
I have bought my camera into work to try and get a better picture of the lens.

Neither I'm afraid. I was just wondering where peoples handsets were manufactured. it would seem that, obviously, most APAC and NAM ones are Chinese as well as some Euro ones.
You mentioned that you got an N97 late on in the hope that the lens cover would have been changed.
Bearing in mind that the N97 has only been out for 18 weeks, and that Nokia only admitted to the problem about a month ago, I would guess it was unlikely that you would get a "modified" version, if there is such a thing.
N97's were being manufactured in their millions since the beginning of the year.
One way of ascertaining roughly when your handset was made, and other info, is from its unique IMEI number.
This can be obtained by inputting *#06# on the dial pad.
Then go to this site and enter your IMEI number and it will give you, amongst other things, its approximate date of manufacture:-

I agree riverboat.
It seems strange that some people are suffering from this problem and yet others, like myself, are not.
It's only human nature that we only hear about the ones that are causing problems and not those that are not.
It would be interesting to see, maybe via a poll, what percentage of N97 owners, bearing in mind that one is too many, are experiencing lens scratching problems as opposed to those who are not.
