V20 on 3

You would do better to direct this question to 3 directly as the ball is firmly in their, and other service providers, court now as the v20 cannot be released by Nokia until an operator has finished putting their branding, logos, screensavers, themes, app's, etc. onto the firmware.
I would love to know too, unfortunately I have found three generally a bit unhelpful or just unknowledgeable on firmware updates. I asked in store and on the phone when I was waiting for v11 and they didn't have a clue.
I assume you are on v11 still? I'm a bit worried by the way they never released v12, although hoping this is because they wanted to jump straight ahead to v20.
Is there a way of de-branding it without unlocking it? It would be nice if one could get the upgrades within the same century that Nokia releases it.
The combination of 3 and the N97 is the perfect storm as far sheer uselessness is concerned. Their customer service reaches new levels of incompetence. I feel sorry for the poor schmoes who work in their call centres.
The phone barely works on 3. It is borderline breach of contract. I will NEVER use them again.
Debranding does not unlock your handset.
As it says, debranding just changes the product code of your phone thus allowing you to download generic firmware,
The upside if you change your product code to a Continent one is that you will, usually, receive firmware updates first. Sometimes months ahead of branded firmware. You will lose all the "adjustments" that operators make, i.e. adding themes or, in some cases, removing/adding features.
The downside is that you will lose any operator specific applications and, as dez borders would point out, you may lose your warranty.
You will still be tied to your operator though at the end of it unless your operator supplies you with an unlock code, usually at a price.
There's no way I'm considering debranding right now, I am on the waiting list for GPS/Lens fix at a local repair shop (waiting for overdue parts) and I don't want to lose warranty in case anything else needs fixing down the line.
3 aren't great, the firmware updates have always been a bit slow (although they did get v11 out reasonably fast) and the signal coverage is still a bit lacking compared to longer established networks, but they did give me a decent deal on the phone...I might consider changing networks next upgrade.
My handset hasn't been too bad, but I can't help getting frustrated that the firmware and parts are out there to make it how it should be, I just can't get them yet!
Yup, I'm on 3 in the UK too. I've sent 3 an email about it but I've got no reply as yet.
I have been tempted to de-brand to upgrade to version 2......I am sick of the quality of the phone on 3.....However, I would lose all the settings for 3 on the phone and not 100% sure how to get them all back...
I will just need to wait
I spoke to them yesterday but all they said was that 3 were working as hard as possible to get the firmware out. Hmmmmm......

I debranded my 3 handset the day i got it!
i think it takes all the settings from the sim.
Otherwise log into my3 and send them to your handset from there.
I still don't have my v20 yet on my phone. I have an Optus branded N97 and the temptation is there to debrand it with NSS!
I sent Optus an email and they never replied. They're obviously clueless in this department of phones.
I came across a student with an N97, on 3 branded. I said for her to come over to the office and I'll update it.
It was running v10. I thought v12 at least. Nope v11 is the latest. So I updated it for them.
Just thought I'd update for anyone who's in my position.
Emailed 3 and had no response so far, so I popped into one of their stores while I was in town today and asked the woman there.
She said a lot of people had been asking, and the Nokia rep had recently been in and told her the new firmware would be released by January latest but probably around Christmas time.
Still a long wait for us then! I'm also not sure why it would be a Nokia rep with the dates as it's surely up to 3 to brand it? Anyway, if you're on 3 I wouldn't hold your breath for v20 this year.
3 brand it, or in my case VF brand it, but then they release it back to Nokia to release over their update network.
Its a complete pigs bollocks and really needs fixing. But thats the state at the moment.
Regards
Neil
Ah bugger. Crimbo! Hells bells, this is, quite frankly, rubbish! Im not prepared to debrand so ill have to sit it out till then! Really not impressed.
Need smooth scrolling!

Still not there. How are we still stuck on V11?!?! I am probably going to debrand now.

Hutchison 3G (your network company) controls when 3-branded FW is released, not Nokia. You could always call 3 and ask?
They did tell me it was January, but could be around Christmas time if we're lucky. What's the point of waiting so long then debranding now?
I'm all for debranding when the time comes, I did my N95 as soon as the warranty expired, but personally I think it's insane on a handset like this where so many people have required fixes under warranty.
It's here at last!!!!
Just in the process of updating! 😊
Mine still says v11 on Nokias website, and no updates on the phone...haven't checked through PC suite yet because it's not on my laptop, but it's not looking like it's out for me 😞
Scratch that - v20 available as of tonight (although only through PC suite, not OTA) and I've updated. Took a few attempts to get it restarted properly but it's there now, not wiped or restored anything but will probably do a hard reset tomorrow and see if it improves anything.
Love kinetic scrolling (my girlfriend just got an N97 mini so was very jealous until now!) but not noticed any other difference really.
The updates listed in the other thread, mail for exchange and memory improver thing, aren't available but it seems to be running pretty well.
Just to add to this, I had a problem with access point after the initial install - attempting to open the Destinations menu would reuslt in 'System Error' and any attempt at connection would leave me with only 'Search for WLAN'.
I've just done a hard reset and that seems to be fixed, I've also now got the Mail For Exchange and Memory Reorganiser available in the updates app so installing those now 😊

Roughly the same for me too. It seems to nuke your destination settings (to the extent that you can't edit it back). Hard reset fixed it, but it's still pretty shoddy quality control tbh.
Happy New Year to you all.
The update went OK, allowing for various problems (like the formatting of the SD card and the erasure of all SMS's,but NOT addresses)
One real problem that I have now is that hyperlinks in SMS's are not working. This means that I cannot access voicemail from an SMS, nor can I open a web link.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it some setting somewhere?
