Also I can not find anywhere to change the ring duration before being diverted to answerphone.
Is it just me or is there no way to change sms ringtone
no way to change duration on p800, may be w/ your carrier, inquire.
as for sms alert go to phone icon third one from top left>edit>preference>sound and alert>look into ring data

Messaging accounts on the Connections tab - and then into 'Alerts'.
But I agree on the other question. It has nothing to do with the phone
it's a matter for the carrier.

Cheers martingale, that was well hidden. I had changed the data ringtone but it had no effect.
as a beginner i also thought of the data ring-tone as SMS ring-tone. btw, what the hell is this data ring-tone ?
anyway, they should keep all settings in one place.
data ring tone is when a modem is dialing to your phone.
In GSM it is possible to detect the call before answering, therefore you have DATA Ringtone & also FAX RingTone
you can change the sms ringtone, when you go to control panel than below to connections>>Messaging accounts>>alerts
