Multiple Home Screens on N97

Epocware have launched a beta version of Handy Shell for S60 V5.

As you can see from the screenshots it offers the usual Handy Shell menu coupled with Applications, Photo's and a Contacts screen which can be displayed in either a cube format (shown), rotate or slide.

A lot of the stuff is configurable but widgets are not supported I'm afraid.

It's also quite RAM thirsty, at about 8 -15 MB, depending on screen in use.

First impressions are that it's a good idea and will appeal to those who were looking for multiple home screens.

However those home screens are limited to those mentioned, although Home Screen, Application and Contacts can be user defined.

The fact that it doesn't support widgets and is RAM thirsty, puts me off.

As I mentioned, this is a beta version and is available for a 14 day trial only. I signed up to download this here:-

Looks quite interesting that, thanks for the tip Ian.

I only have Accuweather anyway, but happy to get rid of it – as you say, the high RAM usage makes me think twice, but might try it and see if it pummels the phone into submission. Downloaded the trial version of Task Manager last night, so got a better indicator of how much RAM I’m using.

Cheers.

I've amended my post as after playing with it for a bit it seems that the RAM usage fluctuates with whichever screen you are viewing, as to be expected I suppose.

However, it does mean that if you revert to the in-built home screen you can find the widgets have been disabled due to lack of RAM (well, there's a surprise!).

Great piece of eye candy though.

Installed and trying it now. Not too bad for a beta. My Handy Weather app links in nicely with the homescreen. I've already had another N97 owner at work ask me where I got it from.

I spoke too soon. Just had my 1st ever memory full message on the N97 when I tried to open a photo with Handy Shell running in the background....

not good enough if it cant run widgets im afraid

i would prefer the homescreen even if it were something akin to the E series phones.
