Rebuild photo/video thumbnails?

11 replies · 11,894 views · Started 18 November 2009

Hi all,

I have an 97 mini and today noticed that about 5 or 6 of the thumbnails in one of my albums appear to be missing or corrupt (get the landscape logo with the diagonal line through it). They all appear to be videos which is odd.

Is there a way to "rebuild" the thumbnails?

Thanks! 😃

Using a file explorer like Y-Browser (see app's sticky at top of this forum), navigate to the folder containing the images or video's and open it.

There you will find a file entitled _PAIbTN. Just delete this file and exit the file system. The next time you open Photo's or Video's the thumbnails will rebuild themselves.

May have to allow it a few minutes if you have lots.

Hope that helps. :icon14:

Thanks Ian. I have deleted this folder, but all the thumbnails still seem to exist when i open the photos app. ?? I have checked and cant find any other instances of this folder. Also tried rebooted the device.

Is there anywhere else it stores or caches these thumbnails?

You could try cutting and pasting your images into a file on your desktop. Then deleting the _PAIbTN file from it and then copying and pasting the images back to the phones folder.

Failing that, you may find that a hard reset is required.

I would guess that you loaded your N97 mini from another phone or back-up and settings have been copied across.

no need to hard reset, i had same problem, solution was this:

delete the thumbnails database, then it will rebuild. Connect N97 to PC in mass storage mode, and check show hidden files in Windows explorer. Locate the Private folder on N97 and open. Open 101ffc31 folder and delete the content glxmdstn. Next time Photos app is opened it will look for pics again.

let me know if this works, it worked a treat for me:icon14:

I'd just like to back this up. It's worked for me too :icon14:

Thanks guys, i saw this on anther forum somwhere. Im pretty sure when i checked i had a private folder on C, Memcard and Mass memory, but only a 101ffc31 folder on mass memory (which is where photos are stored), but didnt have the glxmdstn in there. ???

Photos were transferred using Nokia Photos and transferred a whole album in one go. I'll double check this again tonight but dont think it existed. 😞

ok, connecting phone to PC via mass storage mode (hidden files/folders is on):

Mass Memory (where photos/videos are stored) - Private\101ffc31\ is empty. Folder containing videos has no "_PAIbTN" folder (also none in folders containing photos.

Memory Card - Private\101ffc31 is empty, no photos/videos on there.

Phone Memory - (when viewing via a file browser on phone with hidden files shown) - PRIVATE folder empty. No photos or videos on there.

Yet when opening the photos app all the thumbnails are instantly visible (except broken ones) so they must be stored/cached somewhere?

Anyone got anymore ideas?

Try doing a search in your Mass Memory's Private folder for "glxmdstn". It could be that it's in a different folder for the mini.

Thanks guys. Searching for glxmdstn doesnt turn up anything on mass memory or mem card. :frown:

I have found the following file though, which may be related:

(where H: is mass memory...)

H:\Private\10281e17\[102830AB]thumbnail_v2

This apparently is a "Data base file", so windows is telling me.

So, anyone think i should try removing it? Hopefully i can copy it off first, in case it causes issues?

For info, i decided to take a chance and removed the following file (after backing up):

H:\Private\10281e17\[102830AB]thumbnail_v2

Rebooted phone but no change so decided to try removing all the files from that folder, which were:

[101ffc31]mpxv2_4
[101ffc31]pcv6_1
[102830AB]thumbnail_v2

After rebooting this seemed to do the trick, and also refreshed the music library. Problem solved.

Im guessing these 3 files may relate to music player cache (mpxv2_4?), photos cache (pcv6_1) and possibly the thumbnails you get in the videos and tv app (thumbnail_v2?). Obviously im just guessing here...

Please understand the risks before doing the same thing on your phone as you do this at your own risk 😃

Strangely enough I've had to rebuild my thumbnails again today and I don't have the glxmdstn file anywhere anymore. Instead I had the same as you.

I'm on v20 on my N97 classic. I wonder if this is one of the major changes they made to the OS between versions...
