Just to let people know that The Phones Show 95 is now live, with the main Symbian interest being in the 'user story' and in the 'top 6 eBay smartphone bargains' - you can watch it here or subscribe via RSS (QVGA/phone version and VGA desktop version). Also, Phones Show Chat, the audio followup show, no. 13 is also now live here. Happy watching/listening!

The capacitive thing, i know its a breakthrough thing

....Must resist urge to throw already existing* capacitive s60 5th edition 'bells and whistles' device at Steve's head....

Please let Mr Clark out of whatever basement you have him locked in for some unblinkered journalistic opinons. Thank you.

Steady on.... I was talking in the context of NOKIA. Not the industry at large.

Chill.....

And yes, paging Stuart Clark. I last asked him to prepare a feature on modding the i8910 - and haven't seen him since. So it's not for want of me trying to involve the biggest i8910 HD fan on the team....

I believe I was the last AASer to put up major content for the device, anyway, in the shape of http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Top_20_Freeware_for_the_Samsung_i8910_HD.php fairly recently. So it's not as though I'm ignoring it. And, if Samsung ever finish (i.e. more than the current alpha status) its firmware, I'll happily start using it more too.

I think that's become a fairly common complaint around here....

You appeared to be acting like capacitive 5th edition devices are a new thing, they're not. If i appear to have a thin skin over the i8910, it's been rubbed raw around here recently.

And this is 'chilled'. Get me talking about aboot a certain Canadian podcasting 'tech addict' if you want to see me not chilled. 😉

8-)

I was talking about the launch of a specific new device, the X6. If Samsung would like to actually RELEASE something NEW then I'd LOVE to shout about it....

Looking forward to it. Until then how about looking into getting the Kurara launch written up and on the front page?

"how about looking into getting the Kurara launch written up and on the front page?"

Eeeek.... has it been formally launched? Are you sure? FX: scrurries off to news sites.....

"BTW, i'm still choosing the VGA version as it plays sooo nicely on my Samsung...."

The VGA also plays fine on the Nokia N96, you know. And, I suspect also on the N95 8GB and others, though I don't have those models to hand. It's only the newer single-chip designs that struggle.

Are you sure? Have you actually tried? The video doesn't play on either the N82 nor the 5800. It would surprise me to learn that it plays on any other Nokia Symbian device, since they all share the same codecs (or lack thereof). You know, that's one big reason why you won't see me buying a Nokia smartphone anytime soon. It's still understandable not having DivX/Xvid playback capabilities, but lacking proper MP4 support? In 2009? Totally unacceptable.

slitchfield wrote:And when it's a real product and not a rumour, we'll cover in depth, of course.

Using your own google search option on ASS i typed in 'rumour', and apparently you wouldn't be setting a precedent by reporting on an upcoming phone. According to the story, Eldar's actually got it in his hands. Won't that be more than a rumour?

Edited for accuracy. So your Nokia options for playing your own video podcasts in VGA are a phone from last year, and a phone from 2 years ago? Your current number ones, both of them, don't have the ability to watch themselves BEING number ones in VGA????

As far as using the N96, hmmmm. 2.8" screen instead of a 3.7" AMOLED???

Thats OK, i'll stick with what i have.

Yes, fair criticism of all Nokia's recent single chip designs. Remember that I have been clamouring for graphics acceleration for ages too.

But, despite the lack of DivX codecs or ability to handle VGA high bitrate videos, the N97 mini is still best, IMHO. And most of the video I watch on it is via YouTube or iPlayer or podcast sources, all of which is mostly upsampled QVGA or similar....
