How deep is the N97?

11 replies · 4,013 views · Started 25 November 2009

Posting look like they've dropped off for a while so I thought I'd start a thread for capturing the *NEW* discoveries we've found in the N97.

One of the laments early on with the N97 was how much trouble it was to switch Bluetooth on and off.

Menu->Settings->Connectivity->Bluetooth->Bluetooth->On/Off (and then have to exit out of the menu.

We were all so exciting when a shortcut on the home screen was found:

{upper right hand corner}->{double arrows}->Bluetooth->Bluetooth->On/Off

Wow! We saved one whole step! 😊

Well sitting in the doctor's office this morning I was exploring and discovered a new and shorter way to toggle Bluetooth (this method assumes that you have assigned "Menu" to the user-definable softkey:

{press and Hold MENU softkey until voice command beep}{after beep say "Bluetooth"}{select Bluetooth from the short list which includes random names from your Contact list which sound nothing like Bluetooth -or- you can just wait the 3 seconds for it to autoselect}

Voila! Bluetooth is toggled on or off! THREE STEPS!!! 😃

The point I am making is that there are so many things "buried" in the N97, it may take a bit of exploring to find them all.

PLEASE POST YOUR EXPLORATION FINDINGS IN THIS THREAD.

Hi All

I use BT Switch and have a shortcut on menu. It just toggles BT on and off. If I need to access the BT menu I press the icon when its switched on.

If I understand you correctly--you have to load an non-Nokia application that toggles Bluetooth on & off and then tie up a short-cut position on the homescreen?

Since I cannot find an assignable application in Options->Edit Content->{select Shortcuts 1}->{select Settings}->{Shortcut 3}->Application->{application list}, I assume that you have a 3rd party application to do this?

If so, would you provide a hyperlink?

Okay here is strangeness....while going through the shortcut assignable applications in PORTRAIT mode, Bluetooth was not in the list.

When I opened the keyboard and went through the list in LANDSCAPE mode, it then appeared in the list.

Closing the keyboard and going back to PORTRAIT mode, it now appears in that list.

Have I found another bug (i.e. that the list of available apps that is "built" for selection is somehow dependent upon display mode)?

BTW...assigning Bluetooth to a shortcut does not take TWO (2) steps, but takes THREE (3)...{press Bluetooth shortcut}{Bluetooth toggle}{Exit}.

The voice command method can take only two steps if you allow the recognized phrase popup to time-out while selected on "Bluetooth" and this frees up a shortcut on the home screen.

Notty...just trying to provoke some discussion and thought in the forum...it was just too quiet there for a while.

Reminds me of a quote from Firesign Theater....the N97 is "designed with YOUR MIND in mind".

Do you still have that nervous (N97) twitch Notty ?

Yup it's still there - especaily when a call comes in! Still expecting it to crash every now and again, but it's behaving itself for now....

😉

Oh yea of little faith!

If, or when, it does crash I expect we'll all hear.... "I told you so!" 😃

Does get you like that though after 4/5 months of expected disappointments.

hi all.

Got my n97 for 4 months now and i dont have any probs watsoever.
I did the v20.26 softwareupdate and its runs even better...
Yet i have still lots 2 explore on my black N97....

Cheers...

Not a shortcut but if you press and hold the green call key in home screen and then, when prompted by the beep, say, "What time is it?" the N97 will tell you the time.

If you have an image open in the built-in Photo Browser you can zoom in and out using the volume keys.
