I've had a Vodafone Satio for the last month and after countless problems I'm going to switch it for another handset. I love the phone but its fundamental problems are just too much to live with.
The N97 mini seems the logical choice for a replacement but the loss of the fm transmitter and the smaller screen and flash memory make the N97 more attractive.
Question is, does V20 make the N97 as good as the mini and have the 2 hardware faults (GPS/Lens cover) been fixed for new N97's. If so is the N97 the better option ?

N97's rolling off the production line after the end of July should have no GPS or Lens issues.
Would you make regular use of the FM transmitter and extra memory? If yes, then get a full N97
If not, ask Vodafone if they will discount your line rental if you take an N97 Mini (if they won't reduce your line rental then take the full N97).
Thanks for the pointer to the review, don't know how I had managed to miss that.
The transmitter would certainly get a lot of use. The issue I seem to have now is that vodafone have completely removed the N97 from sale in favour of the mini. Given the two are still in quite a different price range that seems a rather odd move and in my case rather irritating !

Phone VF and ask about the N97 availability - you could even threaten to leave for another network who does offer it.
Well they're not really that far apart on price Nokia Shop online list N97 classic for 449 and mini at 429 although the classic can be had a lot cheaper than that elsewhere and is substantially cheaper than mini at moment because of it's (deserved) dreadful reputation. The mini although stuck with same shoddy software (malware  ) could actually be considered a better more refined N97 although they have had to take out some features to justify it's "mini" title and not terminally p**s-off the early adopters of their supposed flagship - although I'd say as a "happy" classic owner way too late to avoid that. The mini is in most ways superior - better built better screen angle and better keyboard and altogether more solid and smaller in the hand and crucially twice the size of C: 512MB which is one of the major flaws in the N97 and has not really been fully compensated for in firmware updates although they've been desperately trying. The screen is not as good, although brighter indoors, it lacks transflective layer and washes out more in sunlight.
So of the two I'd get the mini although given my ownership experience of the N97 and Nokia's support I wouldn't go near either of them or near S60 when there are so many better alternatives from manufacturers who know how to make a phone and it's software.
Also be warned off any Nokia flagship at launch as firstly they don't work and secondly according to Eldar Murtazin part of their new market strategy is too release flagship/top end model and follow it up within six months with a slightly cheaper (but often bug fixed alternative) and he's been pretty tapped into what's happening with Nokia recently. By the by he quite likes the N97mini.

I guess the statement above is the crux of the whole matter. Don't buy a nokia Flagship handset until 3 to 6 months after release.
I bought my N97 (on FleaBay), upgraded myself to V20 FW and had the GPS sheild fitted (under warranty) at my local NCC - all within a few days of purchase.
My N97 is very reliable and is the best Nokia handset I have ever owned. I think it's great.
P.S. Sony have recently removed their 12MP flagship model from sale in UK, so it's not only Nokia who release product before it's truly ready.
