Nokia has released a new firmware update for the Nokia E71. The new version, 400.21.013, adds improved support for Nokia Email / Messaging and a pre-installed version of Ovi Contacts, contains numerous stability and bug fixes, and includes small updates for Internet radio, Quickoffice, Ovi Store, Email Setup Wizard, and Mail for Exchange. The update can be downloaded and installed using Nokia Software Updater, which is a module of PC Suite.

Only a year late but welcome none the less. Just found out today that a major upgrade for the E75 is coming as well.

Restoring Settings from a backup still does not work properly. None of the data connections (GPRS and WLAN) work at all after restoring settings, something I didn't remember until I re-read an old thread just now. You get odd error messages like "WLAN Connection already in use, close it and try again" or just "Connection not available".

If you don't restore the Settings from a backup, no problems!

And why is there an old version of Nokia Maps installed? When I launch it I immediately get a notice that I need to update it.

Hardly a painless update process, I know there's no UDP but there's no Sense Preservation either. Oh well, only a few mins work to re-install everything and set it all up again...

Can I have an E72 now please?

I'd go through the pain of wiping everything, doing the firmware update (on my NAM variant E71) and reinstalling my apps, resyncing my address book and calendar... if I could do so on my Mac.

does anyone know if this fw v400 is hackable?

Nokia is really stupid at how they did this fw update sh!et! how in the world do you expect your customers to wipe all their apps before the update and reinstall them after??? No wonder they're losing out cuz they are losers if they do something like that!!!

the E52/72 btw looks cheap! has no OLED screen like it should, the menu has this cheap look to it with a stupid animation like screen change, the call and end buttons are not colored and what especially pissed me off was the are FLAT!!! No feel to it whatsoeffiinever! ONE MORE THING ADD EFFIIIN TOUCH TO IT EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A KEYBOARD SO WHAT!!! STILL SHOULD HAVE TOUCHSCREEN LIKE PALM PRE!!!

Wow, nice to see an update for the E71 after all this time.
Anyone knows if it is possible to apply this update to a E71x ?

ok this took me 3hrs to do simply because i had to reinstall almost all my apps that i had on my e71!!! AND it's not even done yet.. it installed maps 2.0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF NOKIA???? Now it's installing or updating all the 43 maps i had of the whole continent of Europe!!!! Its taking forever!!!

Can i create a petition here Raf/Steve?

I need my first Application shortcut to be Inbox for SMS.. the closest i've been able to get is select Messeging which takes me 3 clicks till i get to my Inbox folder.

Is there anyway to get beta labs or nokia create this shortcut??

don't buy e72. i have it for only 8 days. got 1 stuck pixel. ok fine. this kind of thing ought to happen n my luck is damn bad to have it to happen to me. guess what?? yday popped another 1 stuck pixel. so yes, now i have 2 stuck pixels on my e72 screen. called service center, they got no parts yet coz this model is too new. asked whether i can get a new set instead. service center ppl said that they're in charge of repair only, and whether or not to replace a new set for me it's up to the HQ ppl to decide. so yes....this coming monday i'll go to nokia malaysia hq to demand for a new one!! what a quality from a big brand like nokia. i'm utterly pissed off now!!

I know I use a Nokia E63, I know my phone is the poor sibling, separated at birth from the richer E71...but even the E63 has an update available!
I did the firmware upgrade available yesterday!
I am not surprised, no one cared to speak about firmware upgrade being available for the E63 which is the same as E71!
Kudos to Nokia though, they proved again, they dont let down E Series phone that fast.

spent the last hour trying to update the system software on my E71 NAM. I can't even get it to upgrade to version 300. whatever

*whistling in the wind*
oh well

Hi,

Nokia should really do something about it's attitude!!!!

A while ago i had Ovi Contacts 1.06 on my phone wich had a nasty bug: starting up wasn't working at all. I think it was in June that they released 1.09. the bug was gone in this version so i was very happy. Yesterday i was even more happy: they provided us a ROM with Ovi Contacts build in!!! I started updating right away wich is timeconsuming. Guess what????????????? They've put that old 1.06 in this rom. UNBELIEVABLE imho! The 1.09 is gone from their site, if i goto the downloadpage i get a message that my phone isnt supported but i'm not a fool, i still have the 1.09 sis on my pc! SO i tried installing this one but in the middle of the installation it stops. In other words: we're f*cked by them, again!!!!

I had to post one more thing which really surprised me: Nokia Chat!! what a dumb stupid messenging app! WOW!!! This looks like it was made by a developer with the lowest budget in the world! I donno how this past QA!!! Although not surprised, the Noks have been pushing so hard lately in desperation that they are forgetting that people have to use those apps and people are going to have an experience out of it. After using this app it made me wonder weather i should trust them on my next phone. They should have just bought Nimbuzz or something. I know for certain that I'm not upgrading to an E72 because of the build quality and design issues like flat keys, not as good as the E71. Thought about upgrading to a N97mini but was not too happy about the keyboard layout, only a company who's desperately in need of change can come up with a stupid new keyboard layout like that!

How can you make soo many mistakes after building billions of phones?? Have they gotten too big to have an oversight at whats going on? I'm not sure whats happening to them but they are slowly flushing themselves down the drain.

Hi,

Small update:

Rafe, i'm sorry to tell but your info is not totally correct. Ovi contacts is NOT in ROM! Nokia updater puts it on C. I formatted my phone and its gone. Glad that i can install 1.09 again BUT: since they removed the pc download for this version u have to use your mobile browser. They probably check what FW version the phone has since the page says that there is no version suitable for my phone. SO if anyone has the european Ovi COntacts 1.09 in zip format please provide it.

Seems like the screensaver freezer bug (time not updating) and phone hang problem when answering a call (3 sec answer delay) are both finally gone with this firmware update. What a relief!

After 4 years of S60 I invested earlier this year in an iPhone 3gs as I couldn't see anything in the Symbian stable which seemed like a real step forward from my N95 (which I still have and am currently posting from).

When I bought the iPhone I assumed that it would be for 6 months or so and that I would return to Symbian when the next generation of devices was released but when I read threads like this, all the negative N97 threads, and the news of the N97 and Satio withdrawal from sale, it makes me wonder whether Symbian has had its time at the high end of the market.

Nokia seems to have lost any idea of how to do quality control and this unfortunately seems to run through everything they do.

Just about everything I read on AAS these days makes me think that my next phone will be running Android.

No Nokia (Email) messaging option following my upgrade to this firmware on the E71, and all web-data connections (WiFi and 3G mobile) have stopped working ... not impressed! 😞

Is anyone else using Total Recorder / TRacer 3.30 on their E71? I'm using it successfully with the v300 firmware. That is to say - beep suppression works perfectly and provides gapless recordings, even in WAV format. Does anyone know if this holds true for the new v400 firmware as well?

Nokia has sadly forgotten about their communicator brand... E90 is still good performer but they should think about some software update not mentioning new communicator! Evan in the same construction but with faster processor and double ammount od ram...

Beware the new 400 upgrade my E71 phone had english and chinese installed and it worked well until I responed to the - "we have an upgrade for you" a couple of days ago - however after installation it reverted the phone back to english and phillipino - all chinese characters disappeared and the firmware changed. Went to the Nokia Service Center in Shanghai and they knew nothing about the new 400 upgrade and claim they cannot revert the phone back to the earlier settings. Whilst maybe a Chinese escape route it - the phone now is a mess!
It needs reengineering. My warning to others is beware -- if it isnt broke dont try and upgrade it - Nokia havnt got the inbuilt language issues sorted with thi firmware so dont be tempted to upgrade.

I was sort of hoping for an E72 review by now. Due to play.com keep putting back the release date I can still cancel XD Whilst I have read other reviews I do prefer the ones on this site.

Still waiting for it to appear on product code 0568325, unlocked.

My E71 is still stuck on v 200.21.118 (on the 3 network in Italy) and it looks likes its gonna be stuck there forever..

I was thinking of changing the product code so I can access the newer updates.

How safe is it to change the product code?

I can't stress enough this old expression enough. It's hard to ignore the pro advice when Nokia advises us to upgrade but no need. If it ain't broke, then why fix it? Because Nokia is offering something for free which could make things on our phones run smoother but in actual fact the upgrade and its' process does little more than screw up a few programs along the way while offering some needless faze-in app visual = pointless, uses up more memory and renders old software useless. So, DO NOT upgrade unless deep down you are bored and simply need Nokia to shake up your world by screwing up your phone permanently, so you are now pissed off and are strongly considering buying an iPhone instead.

To whom that asked if the E63 has a new firmware update...the answer is yes.

I plugged my wife's e63-1 to NSU and it came up with a new firmware version v400.

I don't think the issue has to do with Nokia. The issue is people changing the product codes that don't match thier proper region or languages. This could be a user changed product code or some poor sooul who bought a phone off the streets and the vendor was the one who changed the product code.

The v400 is pretty good so far. Webpages load faster via the Nokia web browser. Speedier when scrolling around the phone and menus as well.

I have installed the firmware 400 and everything looked OK until I tried to open the contacts and nothing happens. I closed all programs, shut down the phone and when power on the phone.. the problem was still there. Did anyone had the same problem, should I format the phone to recover my contact key? Thank you

Hello Guys

I have nokia e71 vodafone brand. I change the product code to Euro1 to get latest firmware update .

After Getting the firmware update to v4 and debrand the handset to Generic version , There is Push to TALK (PTT) menu rather i goto options on dialed numbers or contacts

Kindly tell me how to remove PTT menu. As it was not in Vodafone firmware.

Hey guys, hoping someone can help me with this.

My brother has an E71-2 which he purchased last year unlocked from UAE. The product code is supposed to be RM346 and entering the product code on the Nokia site shows that firmware 400 is available for it. Yet the phone is stuck on v110 and connecting via NSU says no new firmware is available :s.

Can anyone help me in how to upgrade the phone? Its started to get slow + the tinge in camera is started to bother him. Also the upgraded browser would be nice.
