Places to get GPS/Lens Cover done in a day

Just a thought

is it worth having a sticky where people can post the names/addresses of service centres who are aware of the above issues and therefore will sort it out in a day?

It just seems that everyone goes to their nearest one and it doesn't get sorted, better to travel to one where you know it will be done once and for all.

just a thought.

Sounds like a good idea, I haven't had the repair yet as the shop is waiting for parts but they promised me it will be done in a day once the parts are in stock.

UPDATE ON THIS: Got my phone back today, they had it overnight in the end - I didn't get the phone to them until midday and then they apparantly couldn't do the repair til they had my lock code (they didn't ask me at the time and obviously I had no phone so took a while til they got in contact with me!). Anyway - it was ready this morning as promised and has an entire new back section fitted, looks good, no lock slider problems so far like others have had. Tested GPS on drive home - accuracy was usually between 10-20m, speed was accurate to my cars speedo (no jumps to 300mph+ like before!) and tracking on maps was perfect in regards to staying on the road and keeping up with me. Time will tell with the lens cover I guess but it does look like bigger clearance.

ANY official (UK) NCC should be able to do this repair same day, as long as you check they have stock and book a day in advance.

Just look up your nearest NCC on the Nokia website. 😉

Yep that's what i did, little independant phone shop in High Wycombe. Done in an hour, although very glad i checked it all out as the keylock was stuck so it had to be stripped down again.

Also CHECK what colour parts they have in stock. Especially if you have a WHITE N97.

Mine now looks quite funky with the black spares fitted!

Always said they'd do it in an hour, once they had the parts. They've just phoned me to say they now have, and have quoted half an hour, but I won't mind if it takes them the full hour.

Oh, and *they* asked me, when I first phoned, what colour phone I had, so I'm absolutely certain they know what they're about.

How did I find them? It wasn't the Nokia web site - I had to use Google and then Yell.com to track them down.

Just had it done - excellent, works properly now.

Oh, and it took the guy 15 minutes...

Untested yet, but initial conversation sounds promising:

Crown Communications
22 Herald Way, Binley Ind Est, Binley
Coventry, CV3 2NY
Tel: 0870 112 1263

Said they'd put one up for me and give me a call when in stock.

So between Newark and Bristol, there should be places available within an hour.

Just need Blackpool to London.

Having just used the guys in Bristol to fix my GPS problem (as swift as they promise) I've now had the keylock slider break AHHHHHH.
Local to where I live is Blast Communications in Mansfield Woodhouse. They're getting the parts in, they hope this week. They are happy to do a while you wait repair, will report back.

sjdean if you hop round Manchester over the Cat and Fiddle pass to Matlock then A610, A38 you could say its on a Blackpool to London route 😉

Is the camera lens cover replacement and GPS covered under the warranty?

I rang up a Nokia Care Point in Ealing, West London and they said that the lens cover was not covered under warranty and would have to be taken back to Nokia to replace at cost, and 10 days at that! I thought this was a bit strange...

Can anybody confirm or deny?

Thanks

Mine was done under warranty. The guy ordered the part and let me know when it arrived. He did the job in front of me in around 15 minutes. Phone is excellent now.

Cheers,

Barrie

Both the GPS and Lens Covers repairs are most definitrely covered under warranty.

I would advise you to call Nokia Care on 0845 0455555 and ask them to get in touch with the Ealing NCC to ensure their staff are made aware of the situation.

They sorted mine last week, complete new back took the guy about 10 minutes or so. Can't complain all seems good so far.

Could those of you who have had the GPS fixed in front of you, could you advise what you saw them change? I currently understand it's a cross between a new backplate and some kind of sponge.

I had the sponge put in about a month ago. This last fix was the complete backplate assembly, so the sponge that was put in before remained in place.

Barrie

eBlast did the job as promised very swiftly. It would seem that Westcom Phone Repairs, Clifton Village, Bristol didn't replace the sponge for the GPS as they said they had. eBlast showed me the one they had removed and the claim form for Nokia.

Please tell me, what did the sponge look like?

The old one was about ~5 mm square by 2-3mm thick, metallic foam. The repair guys said the new one is about twice the size.

The one I saw was on a roll, looked to be grey in colour, about 1cm square (possibly more like 9mm), and only about 1-2mm thick.

But the reception is now pretty good so Im happy.

Still, when the rumours came about about new parts, sponges, backplates, fittings, fixings, shieldings etc, and shortages of parts, I imagined some new specific parts, not just off the shelf adhesive sponges!

Hi,

I typically get a GPS lock in 10 seconds on my N97.

The performance in ovi maps is very laggy especially on Navigation mode. My position is typically reported as 100M behind my actual location.

Do you think my GPS may be faulty or is this 'Normal' N97 GPS behaviour?

Thanks,

Ash

By 100 meters behind your position, are you referring to the actual position display on the map or the voice navigation.

I have noticed that the voice navigation "rounds up" to the next hundred yards (I use Imperial units) and as such can seem like it is behind.

With regard to the map display, the positioning algorithm for navigation is trying to give enough of an offset to show the upcoming street for any potention turns so it seldom will show you "on" the intersection if you are the first car. In "My Location" mode (2D), it still maintains this offset and then jumps when you finally are detected as crossing the intersection.

Just poorly designed software for navigation.

Has anyone found anywhere in London that will do the repairs on the spot?

Took mine to a place near Old Street:

The Word
Old Street Roundabout, 213 Old Street
London, EC1V 9NR
Tel: 0207 490 7490
Fax: 0207 490 0700

but they told me they'd have to send it away and it would take 10 days.

Also... those of you that have had the repair done - did they check the product number or anything like that (I have changed mine in order to update firmware which I know technically invalidates the warranty)?

I'm having trouble finding someone who can do it in a day in the London area.

If anyone knows of anyone in London, can they post the details here please?

Thanks 😊

Yesterday afternoon I took mine to "Fone Palace" in the Docklands.

They did the GPS but initially said that they couldn't do the lens cover. They said that Nokia weren't allowing it - he said that it was dust and grit getting into the mechanism, and it was my fault for keeping it in my pocket, and should keep it in one of those things you attach to your belt instead. Which I thought was kind of ridiculous. When I questioned them and said are you really sure Nokia are saying you can't do this... he went into the back of the shop for a bit and then came out and said yes they would do it after all but they were out of stock of the relevant bit. He said to call them again in a couple of weeks, and once they had the part they would do it on the spot (like they did the GPS).

I also phoned another branch of "Fone Palace" on Pentonville Rd - they also said they'd do it but were out of stock and to try calling again next week.

The guys who fixed my phone had to wait about 2 weeks or so for new chassis. My keylock slider was broken but they said for the camera fix it's a new chassis as well. The repair took them about 30 mins.

just had mine done at the Car Phone Warehouse Marsh Mills in Plymouth it took less than 1/2 hour

sent mine off to nokia after checking my warranty online. got it back 10 days later and camera lens is spot on, however only managed to get GPS to lock once since. Don't want to have to send it to nokia again for another 10 days, so anyone know any service centres near Burnley, Lancs?
